Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment
    Ohio University

The Russ College of Engineering & Technology’s Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment (ISEE) at Ohio University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek candidates whose research focuses on areas such as industrial decarbonization, sustainable energy, thermal management, waste utilization, water remediation, critical minerals and materials, and lifecycle analyses. Candidates with expertise in advanced computational methods, including machine learning or artificial intelligence, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The anticipated start is August 2025. The ideal candidate should demonstrate both intellectual depth and breadth, as well as a promise for high-quality research involving PhD, MS, and BS engineering students and a commitment to teaching excellence. Individuals with demonstrated abilities to collaborate across disciplines are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment. The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally-funded research program leading to national/international recognition, teach inspiring courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and the profession. The candidate’s home department will be determined based on their research field and expertise. The ideal candidate should show the potential for excellence in these activities through journal publications, patents, professional conference presentations, course design and instruction, undergraduate and graduate mentorship, external outreach, technical committee participation, and related activities.

ISEE is a vibrant research community that has experienced tremendous growth over the past five years and is central to the university’s research mission. The successful candidate will join an institute consisting of three tenure-track faculty and three full-time research staff. Annual ISEE research awards over the past three years exceed $3 million, including federal, state, and industry sources. ISEE particularly values collaborations with industry and external academic partners. The institute currently supports 16 PhD, 4 MS, and over 20 BS engineering students. We have active research projects supported by the U.S. Department of Energy developing carbon utilization, energy storage, additive manufacturing, sustainable carbon materials, and water remediation technologies. ISEE is located in the newly opened Russ Research Opportunity Center, a $33.5 million investment in expanding Russ College research capabilities, made possible by the $120 million Russ Endowment.

Ohio University is the oldest university in Ohio and recently received the prestigious Carnegie R1 classification for very high research activity, one of 142 such schools nationwide. The university also recently completed its Dynamic Strategy process to craft a vision and goals across four pillars to guide the institution’s future. A key element of the Discovery Pillar is to lead nationally in the energy and environment sectors by advancing research focused on achieving a low-carbon future and mitigating the economic, ecological, and social impacts of global environmental change. Athens is a quintessential college town in the Appalachian foothills of southeast Ohio, offering excellent academic and social opportunities and the convenience of small-town living.
