McMaster University’s Faculty of Engineering invites applications for a teaching-track position at therank of Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Practice and Technology located on the main university campus to begin on July 1, 2025.
The School seeks to recruit an excellent teacher with interest and experience in experiential learning and innovative ways of teaching in the areas of systems automation, internet technologies, and computer integrated manufacturing. Successful candidates will be expected to:
Teach six courses in both undergraduate and graduate levels (18 credit hours per year)
Contribute towards the delivery of the School’s undergraduate and graduate programs, e.g., by leading Programs, mentoring students, introducing new teaching techniques, evaluating student progress, engagement and motivation through interactive and innovative teaching strategies, participate in student and school events, as well as other service tasks, as assigned;
Participate in the ongoing design and delivery of courses in manufacturing systems and technology, computer integrated manufacturing and internet technologies;
Develop and update course materials, assignments, and projects to meet industry standards and emerging trends; and collaborate with other instructors, staff, and industry experts to ensure course quality and relevance;
Remain up to date with the latest technologies, trends, and applications in manufacturing and systems automation: hybrid, smart, and cyber-physical systems; low power networks; AI; and IoT and IIoT integration;
Engage in pedagogical research.
Registration, or eligibility for registration, by the Professional Engineers of Ontario is desirable. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The successful applicant must have a PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline by the time of the appointment.
The applicant must also demonstrate subject matter expertise and excellence in teaching undergraduate university courses that cover the following areas:
Manufacturing systems and technology, including material selection and design process measurement and quality assurance in manufacturing; manufacturing processes for plastics, steels, and ceramics; environmental and safety management; and asset management and reliability using ERP systems.
Computer integrated manufacturing, including programming PLC systems and CNC machines, as well as Internet Technologies and backend systems development, including micro-services, cloud, GIT, containerization, Linux, Web servers and HTML – Resources and Principles, CSS – Bootstrap and DIY, and MySQL & Postgres, NoSQL (Redis) databases.
Industrial Internet of Things: Setting up virtualization systems for manufacturing production, as well as programming and configuration of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), including integration of MES with ERP systems and with the production floor to create vertically integrated computerised manufacturing system. In addition, ability to teach IoT networks such as Xbee, Zigbee, LoRa, WiFi, and Wireless Serial, as well as manufacturing systems integration using cloud and edge computing technologies.
A demonstrated understanding and commitment to student success, teaching excellence, quality education and applied pedagogical research within a university environment are mandatory. The successful candidate must demonstrate effective teaching methods and commitment to adopt modern and innovative teaching approaches, including techniques for online teaching and learning are key components of this role as well as an ability to redesign courses based on learning outcomes and to develop the corresponding assessment tools. Industrial experience and demonstrated leadership roles would be considered a definite asset as would experience with program management in an academic setting including curriculum development and management of instructors and faculty. The qualified candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. The applicant must demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching and research and a willingness and ability to contribute to the department’s collegial and collaborative intellectual community as well as university-wide inclusive excellence goals and priorities.
