    Civil Engineering
    Gonzaga University

    Job Summary

The Civil Engineering Department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2025. We invite skilled teacher-scholars committed to inclusive, equity-minded teaching with a demonstrated record of scholarship to join our teaching-centered and research-active department, which is committed to undergraduate education. More specifically, we are looking for a colleague with expertise in the area of transportation engineering, with interests in sustainable transportation systems and/or informatics.

We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching that promotes welcoming and diverse learning environments. Immediate teaching responsibilities (the first two years) would include our required transportation course (CENG 318 Transportation Engineering). If the candidate is willing and able, other courses helpful to the department may include our new Civil Engineering Programming course (currently under development), CENG 391 Civil Engineering Design and Practice, CENG 261 Geomatics with lab, CENG 404 Sustainable Systems, and/or others consistent with the candidate’s interests/expertise and needs of the department. There will also be opportunities to teach and advise students in our senior design sequence and to teach upper division transportation courses (e.g., CENG 417 Traffic Engineering; CENG 418 Transportation Systems Design).

As a Catholic University with a mission rooted in the Jesuit tradition (see: https://www.gonzaga.edu/about/our-mission-jesuit-values), Gonzaga seeks to educate students to become compassionate leaders who engage with the world, seek justice, and contribute to the common good. As a campus community, we prioritize inclusive excellence and increasing campus diversity, particularly in supporting underrepresented students in higher education. The Civil Engineering Department at Gonzaga University seeks candidates who align with this mission and requests applicants to address it in their cover letter. We value candidates who have worked with a diverse array of faculty, staff, and students, and who contribute to a welcoming campus climate. Evidence of working with underrepresented and minoritized students through teaching, research, mentoring, or administration is preferred. The Department of Civil Engineering currently has eight full-time faculty, over 150 students, and offers an ABET-accredited B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering with a Construction Concentration. Faculty in our department often mentor undergraduate students in research experiences during the school year. Internal funding opportunities are also available to support undergraduate student-faculty research both during the academic year as well as during summer sessions. Professional development collaboration and funding opportunities also exist with Gonzaga’s Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment and the Institute for Informatics and Applied Technology.   In addition, Gonzaga’s Center for Teaching and Advising provides regular faculty development and education opportunities, including a New Faculty Learning Community program to help welcome and support new faculty throughout their first year at Gonzaga.

Gonzaga, ranked 93rd among national universities by U.S. News and World Report and among the top 6% of engineering schools where a doctorate is not offered, is located on the banks of the Spokane River; a short walk from downtown Spokane.  Spokane is near the Selkirk Mountains in Eastern Washington State. The city has walkable neighborhoods, abundant parks, a downtown shopping district, and plentiful urban amenities. With mountains, lakes, and rivers in every direction, Spokane is an ideal base for outdoor recreation.
