    Position description

    The Center for the Built Environment (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking an Assistant Professional Researcher to lead a new research program on environmental life cycle assessment and embodied carbon in the built environment. This team member will work in collaboration with leading research and advocacy organizations to advance this emerging concern, which holds promise to rapidly reduce the greenhouse gas impacts from construction, demolition and renovation of buildings and infrastructure. This research will also be done in partnership with CBE's consortium of 50 partner organizations, a diverse group of industry leaders that represent the breadth of the building sector. In at least the first two years, the Researcher will be collaborating closely with the Carbon Leadership Forum at the University of Washington.

    The Professional Research series is for career academic appointees who focus on independent and creative research activity of high quality at the equivalent to that expected of the Professor series.

    Responsibilities:



    • Formulating and leading research projects in building science with a focus on embodied carbon and life cycle analysis.

    • Developing capabilities for embodied carbon research at CBE; identifying critical research needs, and helping to develop the corresponding team capabilities required to take on the associated challenges.

    • Identifying funding opportunities at government agencies, industry and philanthropic organizations; leading proposals to apply to those opportunities.

    • Overseeing and conducting comprehensive data analysis using qualitative and quantitative data.

    • Writing technical documents and presenting research results, as well as preparing project reports for funding agencies and/or industry partners.

    • Writing articles for high-quality refereed academic journals, industry publications, and/or conferences. Provide summaries for non-technical audiences, including through social media and articles.

    • Managing research project budgets.

    • Collaborating with industry partners, including outreach for data collection

    • Supervising and training graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and other team members working on research projects.

    • Participating in standards and code development within a relevant professional organization, for example, ISO, AIA, IBPSA, ASHRAE, NCSEA, ACSE.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Ph.D. or equivalent International Degree

    Preferred qualifications



    • Ph.D. or equivalent International Degree, in Engineering or Architecture or related fields.

    • Demonstrated expertise in embodied carbon and life cycle assessment

    • Record of high-quality publications in academic journals and other publication venues.

    • Experience with data analysis (using R, Python, SPSS, MATLAB, or equivalent).

    • Previous graduate study, academic, industrial training or other professional experience in building design, construction, infrastructure, building science or closely related fields.

    • At least 5 years of experience designing and conducting research.

    • Demonstrated ability to obtain funding to pursue their research interests and goals, or at least demonstrated proposal writing skills.

    • Experience in a range of research methods (e.g., surveys, field studies, simulation).

    • End-to-end experience with all aspects of research - identification of and planning for funding opportunities, forming competitive teams and concepts for funding applications, writing proposals, research design, data acquisition, analysis, reporting, stakeholder communication.

    • Research experience in life cycle assessment and embodied carbon

    • Expertise in software and/or hardware development for building science applications.

    • Familiarity with life cycle assessment methods, databases and tools to perform primary LCA's as well as utilizing established building sector LCA tools.

    • Familiarity with relevant national and international standards, like ISO-14040, and certification programs

    • Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary and international team, including the ability to efficiently and actively cooperate with other staff members within the organization.

    • Ability to mentor MS/PhD students with building science interests

    • Strong English writing and communication skills.

    • Strong visualization skills

    • Demonstrated leadership experience
