  • Ashby Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mechanics and Materials (fixed term)
    Department of Engineering
    University of Cambridge

Cambridge University Engineering Department is seeking applicants for the "Ashby Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mechanics and Materials".  This Fellowship has recently been established in honour of the pioneering research by Prof M F Ashby CBE, FRS, FREng.  The Fellowship is normally of 3 years duration.

The Ashby Postdoctoral Fellow will be given the opportunity to pursue independent research in the general area of mechanics and materials, as well as to contribute to ongoing research in the Mechanics and/or Materials Groups. Research activities in mechanics and materials are broadly interpreted.  The candidate should be broadly aligned with interests in the groups.

Areas of current research include additive manufacturing, micro- and nano-mechanics, coupled phenomena of direct relevance to mechanical engineering such as performance and failure of electro-chemical devices, statistical theory of vibration, and data-based computational methods, but applicants are not limited to these example topics.

It is anticipated that the appointed Fellow will be affiliated with Pembroke College with the opportunity to engage in College life and to develop their teaching experience by joining the tutorials given to Engineering students in that College.  The College affiliation will carry benefits that include dining rights and the opportunity to interact with College Fellows across a very wide range of disciplines.

The Ashby Postdoctoral Fellow position is primarily targeting candidates who are seeking an academic career in a leading, international research university. Candidates are expected to show outstanding promise in experimental and/or theoretical research. They must have received a PhD recently, with their exam after 1 October 2022, or be close to receiving one.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

    Salary Ranges: *Research Assistant: £31,396 - £33,966
    *Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
