Other Conditions: The University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM), College of Engineering, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering invites applications for a full-time, general fund, tenure track, faculty position in Structural Engineering, pending position clearance and availability of funds to begin approximately August 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The CECE Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Our undergraduate program is accredited by ABET, and we currently have approximately 300 undergraduate and 65 graduate students, supported by 21 faculty members. Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Research and Publication: 1) Establish a research program with external funding; 2) Publish research findings in leading scholarly journals.


2. Teaching: 1) Lead courses in structural loading, structural steel design, concrete design, and related civil engineering topics; 2) Integrate resiliency and sustainability concepts across all courses; 3) Develop advanced courses based on areas of specialization; 4) Deliver content through various distance learning platforms as needed.


3. Curriculum Development: 1) Contribute to the creation of curriculum materials and innovative teaching methods; 2) Participate in initiatives to develop place-based or Hawaii-based curriculum to enhance structural engineering knowledge.


4. Student Guidance: 1) Participate on committees responsible for evaluating candidates for advanced degrees and perform related tasks as assigned; 2) Oversee independent studies, practicums, and internships; 3) Act as an academic advisor.


5. Institutional Service and Community Engagement: 1) Engage actively in departmental, college, and university committee roles; 2) Provide services to professional and broader communities that align with your academic expertise.


6. Diversity and Inclusion: Support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and other underrepresented populations in Engineering.


7. Strategic Alignment: Participate in implementing Native Hawaiian principles from the UH Manoa Strategic Plan.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. An earned Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (“All but dissertation” will be considered; degree must be completed before the date of hire).


2. Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials.


3. Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles.


4. Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in civil engineering.


5. Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.


6. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Expertise in an emerging research area related to structural engineering. Such areas may include, but are not limited to: design of steel, concrete, and/or timber structures for extreme loading including hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, impacts, or blast loading; structural design to enhance resilience/sustainability of coastal communities; structural design and optimization based on smart city monitoring.


2. Research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawaii and/or the Asia-Pacific region.


3. Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.


4. Ability to recruit, retain, and support the graduation of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and other underrepresented populations in Engineering.


5. Willingness to develop place-based and/or Hawai‘i-based curriculum.


6. Willingness to learn about and integrate Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, and/or place-based principles into curriculum, programming, and work culture.


7. Professional licensure is desirable but may be required prior to tenure application.
