  • Teaching-track Faculty Position
    The Department of Biomedical Engineering
    Carnegie Mellon University

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, teaching faculty position. The Department offers an interdisciplinary research and education program housed within a top-ranked College of Engineering. Innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and problem solving reflect the spirit of Carnegie Mellon. We look forward to you joining us to make an impact on the future of medicine through interdisciplinary engineering innovation. Our faculty members benefit from a strong university-wide collaborative culture, generous research support, outstanding students, and comprehensive benefits.

Initiated in the 1960’s, Biomedical Engineering at CMU has a rich history of research, innovation, and clinical application. There are exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations with other engineering departments; departments outside of engineering such as computer science, biology, neuroscience, machine learning, and robotics; and clinicians at major medical centers in greater Pittsburgh and the Mayo Clinic. To learn more about the department, please visit our website at https://www.cmu.edu/bme/.

At CMU, the candidate will be expected to pursue teaching and other education-related activities, such as advising, course development, and curriculum stewardship. A normal teaching load is three courses per semester, or six courses per academic year. If the teaching faculty member takes on a high level of service, this teaching load may be reduced to two courses per semester. The candidate should be able to teach biomedical engineering design (capstone) and medical devices, and the ability to teach classes in other biomedical engineering areas such as bioinstrumentation would be beneficial. Appointments will generally be made at the assistant teaching professor level, but exceptional candidates at a more advanced level will also be considered. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or a related field and demonstrate evidence of excellence and dedication to teaching. Additional required qualifications include a strong teaching philosophy with demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Successful candidates will be expected to provide excellent classroom instruction, supportive student mentoring, and to help nurture an inclusive and culturally diverse environment in our Department and CMU.  Teaching faculty at CMU have opportunities for advancement within the teaching track as well as professional development.

We will actively seek a diverse applicant pool in terms of gender, race, veteran status, and disability. Please use this link http://apply.interfolio.com/157285 to apply for the position, including a letter of application, a complete curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and interests, and a statement of contributions to and plans to enhance diversity. You should also request 3-5 professional references through the confidential letter request function in the Interfolio system. You may wish to send an email to each of your letter writers to alert them that they will receive an automated email from Interfolio requesting that they upload their letter of recommendation (sometimes the automated Interfolio emails are mistaken for spam). Review of applications will begin immediately and all applications received by January 1, 2025 will be given full consideration. The positions will be open until filled.
