    Civil and Environmental Engineering
    Vanderbilt University

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning Fall 2025. The area of specialization is computational engineering for civil infrastructure systems and/or civil engineering structures.

Given the scale of data availability, civil infrastructure systems are set to tremendously benefit from new computational technologies that include AI, ML and data-driven engineering. The successful candidate is expected to leverage such new technological developments and work on innovative engineering research in areas such as risk-informed computational engineering of civil infrastructure systems; data-driven mobility and transportation; computational engineering for smart civil structures; among others. The research area must complement and strengthen one or more of the existing thrust areas in the CEE department in infrastructure systems engineering, materials and structural engineering, and sustainability science and engineering.

The successful candidate is expected to be closely affiliated with Vanderbilt’s new College of Connected Computing - a transformative college dedicated to computational sciences, AI, data science and related fields. The successful candidate is also expected to adopt Vanderbilt’s “radical collaboration” concept and leverage resources and expertise that exist within the School of Engineering, as well as the University as a whole. Vanderbilt University recently launched discovery centers in Sustainability, Energy and Climate; National Security; and Immersive AI translation to address pressing challenges in these areas of clear and immediate societal need. Leveraging these investments, Vanderbilt is set to play a big role in shaping the future of civil infrastructure locally, nationally and internationally.

The new faculty member will be expected to (i) establish a nationally recognized research program with extramural funds, (ii) teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and (iii) contribute to synergistic efforts within the department, school, and university. A PhD in civil engineering, or a closely related discipline must be in hand at the time of the appointment. Applications should include a (i) cover letter (ii) complete curriculum vitae, (iii) statement of research, (iv) statement of teaching, (v) service statement, and (vi) a minimum of three references. Application materials are to be submitted online at http://apply.interfolio.com/157093. Applications will be reviewed as they are received; those received by January 15, 2025, will be given full consideration.
