  • Lecturer (Part-Time)
School of Engineering: Chemical and Biological Engineering
    Tufts University

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (ChBE) at Tufts University has an opening for a part-time lecturer position. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025.

The lecturer search is for a graduate course on Advanced Kinetics and Reactor Design. It is a core course in the Chemical Engineering MS and PhD programs, typically taken by each student in their first year. In this course, we review and build upon prior knowledge of chemical reaction kinetics and reactor design to address more complex scenarios beyond the conventional. While the specific content is negotiable, prior iterations have focused on: reaction stoichiometry with multiple reactions, chemical equilibrium, analytical reactor material balances, numerical reactor solutions, energy balances in reactive systems, non-ideal mixing behaviors/residence time distributions, kinetics of elementary reactions, kinetics of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, and coupled reaction/diffusion. Iterations focused primarily on reactor design or reaction kinetics are also welcome. The graduate course is held on Tuesday/Thursday 4:30-5:45 pm, and the applicant must be available to teach during regular business hours. Class sizes generally range from 5-15 students.

Information about the department can be found at: http://engineering.tufts.edu/chbe/

Tufts’ SOE distinguishes itself by the interdisciplinary focus and integrative nature of its engineering education and research programs, within the environment of both a "Research I" university and a top-ranked undergraduate institution. Home to nine graduate and professional schools across four campuses, Tufts University prides itself on its culture of cross-school partnerships. Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus is located only six miles from historic downtown Boston, facilitating extensive opportunities for academic and industrial collaborations, as well as participation in the rich intellectual life of the region.

    Qualifications

Candidates should possess an earned doctorate in chemical engineering. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate an enthusiastic teaching style, excellent communication skills, and subject matter expertise. We seek individuals who embrace opportunities to work collaboratively within the department as well as across the School of Engineering (SOE) and the University.

    Application Instructions

Candidates should submit their application, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching interests and objectives, and contact information for three references online through Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/162412. The cover letter should be addressed to: Professor Nathaniel Eagan, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Tufts University, 4 Colby Street, Medford, MA 02155.

Candidates are encouraged to demonstrate attention to diversity and inclusion as it relates to teaching throughout their application. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by June 20, 2025. Application review will proceed on a rolling basis and continue until the position is filled.
