Description:
The School of Mining Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is regarded as Africa’s largest mining engineering school and currently ranks among the top mining engineering schools/departments worldwide on the QS World University Rankings by subject area. The school currently has a capacity for about 550 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate students, with 23 Academic and 12 Technical and Administrative permanent staff positions. The school has a good research record and support system for the personal development of academic staff and is seeking to appoint a Professor or an Associate Professor in Rock Engineering.
Requirements:
Applicants must preferably have a mining engineering background and have earned doctorate in rock engineering; National Research Foundation (NRF) rating or potential to apply for NRF rating; teaching experience or potential to teach at University level; a good research track record with more than 1000 (500 for associate professor) citations with evidence of H-index; 30 (15 for associate professor) journal publications or equivalents as defined in the South African Department of Higher Education and Training guidelines; and evidence of local and international collaborations. Definite advantages include operational rock engineering experience in the mining industry, rock engineering laboratory work experience, supervision to completion of postgraduate research work (a combination of PhDs and MScs), membership of a mining-related professional body, and registration or eligibility to register as a professional engineer (or equivalent).
Duties: Duties will include undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing; supervision of postgraduate research; undertaking personal research, including attracting research grants and earning research income; mentoring early-career academics; promoting innovation in the School; and participation in administrative activities at the School, Faculty and University levels.
