The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Oakland University invites applications for a tenure track position at the assistant professor level in advanced manufacturing and system design. The appointment would be effective as early as August 2026.
We seek applicants with research and teaching interests related to system design and smart manufacturing with a focus on data-driven methodologies using machine learning and artificial intelligence. Successful candidates will be expected to develop an externally funded research program that includes fundamental and/or applied research. The candidate should be able to teach and develop courses in AI/Design/Smart manufacturing related subjects at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. An earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required.

The Mechanical Engineering Department has 23 full-time faculty members who are dedicated to excellence in research, teaching and service. The department hosts four material focused centers: the Automotive Tribology Center, NSF IUCRC – Center for Industrial Metal Forming (CIMF), Fastening and Joining Research Institute (FAJRI), and the NSF IUCRC – Center for Composite and Hybrid Materials Interfacing (CHMI), all of which are active in research.
