Thayer School of Engineering (“Thayer”) at Dartmouth is an internationally recognized leader in human-centered, interdisciplinary engineering education. Founded in 1867, Thayer blends a liberal arts foundation with rigorous technical training, offering a unified engineering sciences school that encourages hands-on, systems-based learning. With a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship—over half of its faculty have launched startups and hold patents—Thayer fosters innovation through a variety of initiatives and programs designed to support creative thinking and technological advancement. With more than a third of its faculty engaged in biomedical research and deep partnerships with Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth Health, Thayer is a leader in medical engineering and healthcare innovation. The school boasts gender parity in undergraduate engineering degrees and a vibrant campus presence, with nearly 50% of Dartmouth students taking an engineering course. Supported by a $252 million endowment and cutting-edge facilities, Thayer continues to shape the future of engineering through collaboration, creativity, and impact.
As Dartmouth continues to advance its academic mission and deepen its global reach, the next Dean of the Thayer School of Engineering will provide visionary leadership to foster inclusive excellence and strengthen its role as a leader in interdisciplinary engineering education and research. A critical priority will be to expand partnerships with Tuck School of Business, Geisel School of Medicine, the School of Arts & Sciences, and external research and industry collaborators, further enhancing Thayer’s interdisciplinary impact and global engagement. The Dean will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the school and play a key role in aligning its priorities with those of the broader university. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean works collaboratively with university leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners to promote academic innovation, research excellence, and student success. The Dean oversees the school’s operating budget and endowment and leads a team of faculty and staff committed to advancing Thayer’s mission and values.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary, strategic, and inclusive leader with a deep understanding of higher education and engineering; hold a doctoral degree in engineering or a closely related STEM discipline; and possess a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, teaching excellence, and interdisciplinary engagement that qualifies for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor at Thayer.
