    Electrical and Computer Engineering
    University of Utah

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah seeks candidates who can be world-class leaders in computer engineering with a particular emphasis on open-source analog, digital and mixed signal hardware design, hardware accelerator design, open-source electronic design automation (EDA), machine-learning-based EDA, hardware security, generative AI technologies for EDA, to fill two openings for a tenure-track Assistant Professor, although exceptional candidates will be considered at other ranks. The ECE Department has strong programs in Solid State/MEMS/Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing, Computer Engineering, EM/Optics, and Power Systems and Control. We have established a world-leading effort in open-source hardware and EDA and are focused on further strengthening this area.  Exceptional candidates with expertise in related areas, as well as outstanding candidates in any area, are encouraged to apply.  We seek individuals who demonstrate exceptional potential for or evidence of leading a high-impact, world-class funded research program training PhD students over decades. All candidates must have strong aptitude for effective teaching in core and specialized areas of our curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty responsibilities include developing and maintaining an internationally recognized research program, effective classroom teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and service within the University and within professional communities.

Our goal for these hires is for the combination of new hires and existing faculty to form a world-known leading topical area.  To this end, we welcome both individual applications as well as coordinated applications from two or more individuals.  An example includes but is not limited to existing collaborators for whom colocation would further enhance research efforts.  To this end, ALL applicants must include in the cover letter their vision for how their expertise would interact with specific existing faculty, specific other applicants, and/or profiles of potential new hires in order to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

Applicants should apply online at https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/154652 and include a CV, names and contact information for at least three professional references, a research statement, a teaching statement, and the cover letter.  Applications will be reviewed upon receipt, and will be accepted until the position is filled, preferably in Spring 2024. Applicants must hold a PhD in ECE or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.

    EDI Commitment

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is committed to fostering and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). We recognize the need to develop a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body and encourage applicants with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and expertise to apply.

The Department has been growing steadily in the past 2 decades, has a strong focus on world-class research, and currently has >40 faculty members and >115 doctoral students enrolled. Current ECE faculty members have founded or co-founded several successful companies; the University has been consistently ranked as one of the top schools for startup creation. The Department also has strong collaborations with the medical research community and industry. The Salt Lake City metro area is a global and diverse (by any social metric) metropolitan city with 1.2 million residents and an easy-access international airport.  The metro area and state of Utah more broadly boast an outstanding quality of life, are comparatively affordable, and offer unparalleled access to world-class recreation and natural beauty.  Come join us!
