    The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas, invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track lecturer position. The primary responsibilities of lecturers are to teach and to carry out service within the department. Applicants with teaching expertise in any area of mechanical engineering will be considered, but familiarity with and/or interest in engineering education, undergraduate teaching at the introductory level, laboratory course design and support, and curricular issues is preferred.


    This position requires teaching primarily undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering, with the teaching load equivalent to (three class sections per semester) in courses or laboratories focused on the operation of a wide variety of manual and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools, welding, and other fabrication equipment and tools such as additive manufacturing, laser cutting, and forming. Experience with electromechanical systems is preferred. Course instruction includes safety procedures and standards, manual and power hand tools, metrology, wood shop tools and machinery, metal machining (including manual and CNC milling and turning), welding, and additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping equipment. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds. Service duties include student advising and outreach as well as participation in department committees with an undergraduate focus. Candidates with particular interest and/or demonstrated accomplishments in building diverse and inclusive teaching environments should indicate as much in their diversity statements.


    This position is expected to start on July 1, 2024, and the initial term of appointment is one academic year, which may be renewed contingent upon performance, availability of resources and the needs of programs.








    Qualifications




    The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related discipline or must complete the Ph.D. by November 1 of the year employment commences.
