You will have the opportunity to perform a multidisciplinary theoretical and experimental research on the edge between electronics, radio science, optical science, and electronics. Our target is that you will acquire the doctoral degree in four years.

Reseach topic
The topic is a challenging interdisciplinary research in the field of advanced energy solutions. The target is to create a flexible sheet combining the functionalities of a thin-film solar photovoltaic panel with the advanced wireless power transfer in the radio frequency range. Advanced wireless power transfer means the contactless transfer of the energy from accumulators located on the back side of the sheet to multiple receivers located on the front side. The solar panel harvests the energy of sunlight converting it into electricity and transmits it to the accumulators. Then the sheet can be folded or rolled up and carried to another place where the stored energy is used for feeding an electric generator which transfers the energy across the sheet to several receivers located in arbitrary places of top of the sheet. This transfer is possible due to an array of conductors called metasurface incorporated into our sheet. These conductors combine the operation of a radio frequency metasurface with that of the contact electrodes of a solar panel.

Requirements
Your education implies the sufficiently good knowledge of electrodynamics and you have a Master’s degree in radio science, radio engineering, photonics, physical optics, etc. You are familiar with at least one of commercial computational tools used in applied electrodynamics (HFSS, CST Studio, Comsol Multiphysics etc.) and capable to develop the simulation results using Matlab. The experiences is nanofab and electronic circuits are very welcome. In this position you will apply for the study right for doctoral studies at Aalto University. Thus, please check the student information and application criteria. In particular, please pay attention to the mandatory skill level in English.

Research group
The theoretical and applied electromagnetics of complex media research activities combine two closely collaborating groups led by Profs. Konstantin Simovski and Sergei Tretyakov. These groups belong to the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering, Aalto University, Finland. Our research interests span over a wide range of topics of electromagnetic theory, such as metamaterials and metasurfaces, bi-anisotropic materials, plasmonics, electromagnetics of graphene, nonreciprocal materials, scattering and diffraction. Main application areas of interest include antennas for all frequency ranges, microwave techniques, nanophotonics, solar cells, and thermophotovoltaics. Please see full description of our groups´ research and members in http://meta.aalto.fi/index.html .

Salary and contract terms
The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2450 €/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The starting time is flexible but no later than fall 2019.
