The Computational Soft Matter Laboratory (https://farokhirad.com) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (https://mie.njit.edu/) at the New Jersey Institute of technology has one Ph.D. position available for Fall 2022/Spring 2023. The Ideal candidate will conduct computational research at the interface of engineering, materials, and biophysics for engineered nanoparticles-based drug delivery systems.
An ideal candidate is expected to have an earned B.S. and M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical/Materials Engineering, or a closely related field.
The preferred qualifications include:
- Background in biomaterial, fluid flow, and interfacial transport phenomena.
- Experience in developing numerical models and computation algorithms
- Experience with scientific programming in Fortran, C/C++, Matlab, Python, or other object-oriented programming languages is a PLUS
- Strong interest and self-motivation to perform cutting-edge research in real-world engineering and to publish scholarly papers

About the research in drug delivery:The central aim of our research is the development of computational modeling techniques for the design of efficient drug delivery systems, including membranes and micro/nanoparticles. To effectively design nanoparticles for selective targeting, new strategies beyond the conventional paradigm must be explored. We are investigating how smart nanoparticles can be utilized to efficiently deliver drugs to the diseased sites. We study how the interplay between NPs physicochemical features and cell biophysical properties affects nanoparticle transport and internalization to rationally design nanoparticles for specific and efficient cell targeting. In our group, you will have plenty of learning opportunities, from developing novel computational frameworks and numerical methods to the fundamental understanding of nanoparticle-based targeted drug delivery systems. Also, you will have opportunities to collaborate with experimental and theoretical research groups at NJIT.
