The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at The George Washington (GW) University in Washington DC, invites applications for a Professor of Practice position beginning as early as Fall 2020. The appointment will be made at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Practice rank depending on the successful candidate’s experience. GW has a history of supporting faculty with practice-of titles who are educators, practitioners, and scholars, and the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering department has set high standards in providing a teaching and work environment in which practice-of faculty will thrive. The Professor of Practice may be assigned to teach courses in their areas of expertise throughout the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, including mechanical design and capstone design courses. Once familiar with program requirements, the Professor of the Practice may advise undergraduate Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering majors and will participate in course curriculum development.

An initial multi-year appointment will be offered in accordance with the University’s Faculty Code. Professor of Practice faculty typically teach three courses per semester, with graduate and undergraduate teaching assistant support.

Applicants for the Professor of Practice position must be highly effective classroom teachers who can demonstrate excellent educational leadership and organizational skills. They must have a strong commitment to and demonstrated excellence in teaching as well as developing innovative teaching models; have the ability to help oversee an undergraduate program (advising, program oversight, and student support).

Applicants at the Professor of Practice level must provide examples of academic, scholarly, and educational success outside the classroom that have resulted in, or have the potential to result in, significant advancements in engineering and engineering education. They must demonstrate commitment to educating a broad and diverse group of students and in working to increase the participation and success of students from groups underrepresented in engineering. A Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a related area, by date of appointment is required.
