The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEEN) at the University of Utah invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position in interdisciplinary digital infrastructure and systems research with a focus on development of 4D mixed, augmented, and virtual reality tools with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2020. This position is anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor level although outstanding candidates at the Associate Professor level are encouraged to apply. This position is part of the University of Utah’s priority to build a diverse faculty; thus, female and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Description – Continuing the Department’s rapid expansion into cyberinfrastructure, we are looking for outstanding candidates with expertise in all areas related to the development of 4D visualization tools to create environments where computer-generated information is superimposed onto the user’s view of a real-world CVEEN infrastructure. Analyses of complex design scenarios require improved visual and computational comparisons linking performance and time. For example, emergency response analysis requires tools that can use external images, building plans, and building sensors to create safe zone maps for firefighters and other response personnel. As such, individuals with expertise in data fusion technologies, prototyping and experimentation in digital environments, model integration and curation, and strategies for protecting the integrity of infrastructure data are highly encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will be required to develop an externally-funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to Civil and Environmental Engineering, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, produce scholarly publications, collaborate with other faculty on professional development interests, and provide departmental, college and university service. An earned Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline before the date of hire is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary. A PE is highly desirable. Candidates with strong core fundamentals that allow them to work across disciplinary boundaries are particularly encouraged to apply. We are seeking highly motivated team players looking to help advance our exciting undergraduate and graduate engineering programs and contribute to the Department’s online education efforts.
