Position description

As part of UC Davis’ commitment to hire superlative faculty with an outstanding commitment to teaching, research and service that will promote the success of historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities and address the needs of our increasingly diverse state and student population, the College of Engineering announces a Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment or Lecturer with Security of Employment position in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Applications are encouraged from candidates who will be outstanding educators and should provide evidence of effective and innovative teaching in chemical and/or biochemical engineering. In addition to teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, candidates are expected to lead the development and assessment of a new Master of Engineering (MEng) program in chemical engineering. The one-year Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree enables students to fit their interests and goals with a flexible, tailorable course work that culminates in specialization in biotechnology, process engineering, or computational methods. The successful candidate will participate in continuous curriculum improvement, and diversity and inclusion efforts in the program and department.

As one of the country’s leading research universities, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for, or an exceptional record of, pedagogical research, teaching and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment.

Appointment will be as an academic year (9-month) Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment or Lecturer with Security of Employment.

Minimum Qualifications
• A Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering or a closely related field is required and must have been awarded by the date of application.

Additional Qualifications
We desire applicants who have identified strengths and experiences in the following areas:

• Excellence in teaching and pedagogical development that complements or extends existing teaching strengths in the Department of Chemical Engineering and elsewhere on campus.
• Evidence of commitment to or strong potential for commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities, and how this commitment integrates with teaching, research, and service.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Participation in department, college, and university service as a member of UC Davis Division of the Academic Senate is an expectation under our faculty shared governance model.

We desire candidates who demonstrate understanding of issues affecting underserved populations such as (but not limited to) women, underrepresented minorities, individuals self-identifying as LGBTQIA+, veterans, individuals with disabilities, economically disadvantaged groups, first-generation students, undocumented students, or students with any intersections in between. Successful candidates will help advance UC Davis’ strategic goal of improving access and building an inclusive community for all marginalized populations. A successful candidate also will have an accomplished record (calibrated to career stage) of teaching, research, or service activities addressing the needs of underrepresented minorities, and a clearly articulated vision of how their work at UC Davis will continue to contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population.

Application Requirements
For fullest consideration applications must be completed by March 23, 2021.

Application packages should be submitted online through UC Recruit and should include the following documents: current Curriculum Vitae, Cover Letter, Statement of Research, Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Statement of Teaching Accomplishments and Philosophy, and the contact information of 3-6 individuals who will be contacted to provide a letter of reference on your behalf.

We encourage applicants to explore the College of Engineering's and the Department of Chemical Engineering’s websites. We strongly recommend that all candidates visit our recruitment website for additional information about how their application materials - including their Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - will be assessed by the Search Committee in the screening and review process. For questions regarding this process, please contact the Search Committee (Chair Prof. Tonya Kuhl and Academic Personnel Coordinator Rebecca Saeteurn).

If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for positions with tenure or security of employment will be subject to reference checks.
