Two engineering PhD scholarships in internal forced convection heat transfer at University of Pretoria

New incoming International students only

The University of Pretoria invites International (not RSA) applications from graduates to apply for PhD (doctoral in engineering) or PhD (applied science) fellowships at the University. The fellowships are in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering.

The School of Engineering has 7,000 students and is ranked by the ISI on citations as amongst the world’s top 1%. The Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering is the largest Department of Mechanical Engineering in South Africa and one of the largest in the world, comprising 50 Faculty and more than 1 800 Undergraduate and Graduate Students. The Programme offered by the Departments is internationally recognized, via the Washington Accord.

The Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering which enjoys an international reputation in teaching and research, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for two PhD fellowship positions, to be filled as soon as possible.

One of the Department’s research strengths are energy and in the wide field of energy in heat transfer. This research is being conducted in the School of Engineering, in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering.

Doctoral fellowships are awarded annually (depending on good progress) for a three year period.

Applicants are expected to have an excellent academic record with a good bachelors engineering degree and master’s degree in the field of experimental internal forced convection or very closely related. Good experience in instrumentation, calibration and data acquisition would be a recommended requirement.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and creative, with good communication skills and with expertise in experimental heat transfer (single phase convection or condensation).  Preferably with Mechanical or Chemical Engineering qualifications.

The total monetary value of the fellowships is sufficient to include for tuition fees, accommodation, travel, and living costs (which are much cheaper than most other countries in the world).

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the positions have been filled. The application process consists of two steps. The first step is to forward a short cover letter, CV/resume and full academic record to the Head of the Department, at:

Prof JP Meyer

Head: Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering

University of Pretoria

Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering

Pretoria, 0002 South Africa

Email: [email protected]

If selected, then the second step follows, which is an online interview, research proposal (with reference letters) that needs to be submitted.
