Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department

Welcome!

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering proudly prepares graduates to succeed in industrial careers.

We offer four degrees:

Students that participate in our programs get opportunities to work one-on-one with faculty, do hands-on research and learn how to use the equipment found in many industrial settings.

Take it from one of our graduates Brian Fretschel, "Your work and attention to your students definitely paid off and made all of our experiences at UMD great and helped prepare us for the working world. It is definitely an ever-changing industry out there and the broad skill set we developed at UMD could not have helped more."

Our Students Succeed

Our students excel in so many ways and can demonstrate their newfound expertise:

In addition to all of these team efforts, our students share what they've learned via the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and through other research projects that take them to local, state and national conferences.

Research

Our faculty members pursue cutting-edge research and share their passion for lifelong learning by inviting students to assist them with their research efforts.

These projects can lead to changes in our community. For example, senior design classes and the Duluth Shines program offer students the chance to partner with area businesses to collaborate and devise solutions for real-world problems.

Areas of faculty expertise include manufacturing systems, product innovation, strategic technology management, sensors and signal processing and medical image analysis, just to name a few. In other words, our students are exposed to a wide variety of options that will prepare them for a expansive career path.

Connected to Our Community

We stay in touch with industry needs by collaborating with local businesses to provide students with real-world problems to tackle.

We also participate in a wide variety of efforts to mentor youth and inspire STEM learning in people of all ages. Our students and faculty participate in school programs organized by the Swenson College of Science & Engineering outreach program, we host tour groups, offer demonstrations at off-campus and campus events and offer seminars during the academic year that benefit professionals and our students.
