Position Summary

Department Summary
Oregon Tech’s Oregon Renewable Energy Center (OREC) department is growing rapidly – both due to increasing projects and new opportunities to develop applied research programs. OREC is already one of the largest research institutes at Oregon Tech and currently offers 3 research projects involving a large number of undergraduate students from Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MMET) as well as Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy (EERE) departments at our 3 campuses in the Pacific Northwest. OREC has a dedicated lab space for OREC research projects as well as EERE Final Design Projects with a hands-on approach to learning for students. Our students are active in many competitions in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering as well as Renewable Energy, such as DOE Agrivoltaics, DOE Solar Prize Award, Formula SAE, Baja SAE and RoboSub; and many students take advantage of the internship opportunities offered through MECOP – a unique internship alliance driven collaboratively by Oregon’s engineering universities, their respective student bodies, and industry partners.

Position Summary
The position is half administration (for OREC research projects and operations) and half research (publication, grant/funding proposal writing, etc.). The research part calls for an established scientist in the field of renewable energy engineering and closely related engineering/research fields.

The OREC Lab Manager will report directly to the OREC Director. The OREC Lab Manager/Research Coordinator will spend approximately half of the time on management for the Oregon Renewable Energy Center (OREC) lab space and general operations, and the other half of the time on executing renewable energy research project development/grant drafting.

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering or, related field
  • One (1) or more years’ experience in electrical shops that includes use of renewable energy technology band set up, such as solar photovoltaics, battery energy storage, electric transportation (vehicle, aviation, etc.), grid integration/resilience, wind turbine, geothermals, etc.
  • Knowledge of product and maintenance manuals for equipment. Awareness of OIT purchasing guidelines, Safety Regulations and OSHA Guidelines. Experience with electrical/electronics shop practices and operation of all shop machinery. Knowledge and consciousness of high quality and technical accuracy of work performed
  • Possess excellent writing and computer skills and database management experience.
  • Previous experience in technical discipline writing
  • Proven track record in grant proposal development, securing new funding opportunities, and knowledge of research proposal development
  • Possess a capacity for curiosity and adaptability to work on projects in disciplines which may be unfamiliar
  • Be highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes
  • Ability to work under pressure and with broad direction from leadership and limited direct supervision and use independent judgement
  • Capable of working collaboratively with faculty and staff to define, refine and produce a strong and competitive proposals
  • Ability to work cooperatively and in concert with other members of the Sponsored Projects and Grants Administration Office (SPGA)
  • Efficiently and effectively support faculty and staff in achieving the strategic mission of the University
  • Demonstrate a willingness to develop the capacity to distinguish and identify funding opportunities for their constituents and to participate in professional development opportunities
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3 or more years’ experience in electrical shops that includes use of renewable energy technology band set up, such as solar photovoltaics, battery energy storage, electric transportation (vehicle, aviation, etc.), grid integration/resilience, wind turbine, geothermals, etc.
  • Minor electrical troubleshooting/repair, electrical/electronics instruction experience, research experience in renewable energy
  • Proven desire/ability to work with students and faculty
  • Demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary research projects
