STADIUS Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing, and Data Analytics pursues excellence in an explicit and synergistic combination of fundamental and applied research:

With core concepts from linear and multi-linear algebra, statistics, optimization, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, the fundamental research is focused on the development of mathematical engineering tools and numerical algorithms.

Building upon this foundation, the applied research is geared towards putting these tools and algorithms into motion in order to advance the current state of technology across a wide range of relevant application fields, including industrial automation and control, speech and audio signal processing, digital communications, biomedical data analysis and signal processing, bioinformatics and systems biology.

STADIUS professor Moreau unveils unethical research: 29 articles retracted, so far

Yves Moreau

March 2024

After an extensive four-year effort by bioinformatician Yves Moreau, "Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine" recently retracted 18 papers on genetics and genomics. This move comes in the wake of earlier retractions by other publishers over the past four years. In total, 29 articles have been retracted so far because of their reliance on genetic material that was apparently obtained without consent or related ethical issues.

The retracted studies were centered on genetic research on minority populations, such as the Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Hui, who reside in regions rife with reported human rights abuses, according to Human Rights Watch. Moreover, many of the authors were found to have affiliations with Chinese law enforcement agencies. When requested, the authors failed to demonstrate explicit consent from the individuals whose genetic data they utilized for their research.

When asked about his involvement in confronting ethical dilemmas, Moreau (KU Leuven ESAT STADIUS) emphasized: "Ethics is not a checkbox exercise". Ethical considerations must be part of the fabric of scientific inquiry, from its inception. While he appreciates the publishers’ belated efforts to enforce stricter guidelines, he views the retractions as a strong signal towards scientists: unethical research can be exposed and rectified, damaging your reputation a long time after the facts.

Moreau's vigilance extends beyond these current retractions: he has flagged an additional 70 papers which publishers are currently scrutinizing. His commitment to ethical integrity doesn’t stop yet. In an interview with Science, he raises concerns about facial recognition technology and about genetic testing kit manufacturers catering to Chinese law enforcement.

Einstein Foundation Award 2023 For Yves Moreau

Yves Moreau

January 2024

On the 14th of November 2023, the Einstein Foundation Berlin announced the winners of the Einstein Foundation Award 2023.

The winner of the individual award is Yves Moreau of the KU Leuven. Moreau is one of the most passionate advocates for ethical standards in the use of human DNA data in the age of artificial intelligence and big data.

Jury member Michel Cosnard, computer scientist at the Université Nice-Sophia-Antipolis, states: "Moreau links deep research in DNA analysis and artificial intelligence with ethics, integrity, and human rights. His work and achievements serve as a cornerstone to help us confront the difficult social questions that arise from rapid technological developments."
