The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position to begin in Fall 2025. We are conducting a broad search for innovative scholars at the Assistant Professor level in environmental engineering at the nexus of environmental processes, human health, resource sustainability and emerging technologies. We seek faculty who will: create an environment in which all members of the collegiate community are welcomed, supported, and able to thrive; provide a transformative and personalized educational experience that prepares our graduates to become an engineer and something more; lead signature areas of research and economic development to drive breakthroughs that have societal impact; train graduate students to become outstanding technical leaders and innovative researchers; engage in mutually beneficial partnerships, boldly communicate our achievements, and build influence with state and federal decision makers; acquire and steward private investments that strengthen the college and amplify our service for the common good.

Our program has strengths in the environmental engineering Grand Challenge areas of sustainably supplying food, water, clean air, and energy; curbing climate change and adapting to its impacts; designing a future without pollution or waste; and fostering informed decisions and actions. The Environmental Engineering faculty have strengths in environmental chemistry and microbiology, treatment and remediation technologies, systems modeling, and sustainability. We welcome applicants who complement these strengths, including research that advances social and environmental justice, and those who can lead us in new directions.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a vibrant, collegial, research-active department with 19 tenure-track faculty, 250 undergraduate students, and 70 graduate students. The department is centrally located on campus in the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences, which enables regular opportunities for engagement with students, faculty, and staff throughout the College. CEE has a global reputation for research innovation and our faculty hold leadership positions in college-wide and university research units, particularly at IIHR - Hydroscience and Engineering, the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination, the Iowa Superfund Research Program, and the Iowa Wastewater and Waste to Energy Research Program. These centers and programs help fuel a highly interdisciplinary research enterprise where faculty have access to state-of-the-art research facilities, support staff, central analytical facilities, and the Argon high-performance computing system.

Our department is welcoming, supportive, encourages a robust exchange of ideas and develops the potential of our faculty, staff, and students. We recruit, mentor, and retain talented and diverse faculty and staff while providing opportunities to “Build a Career | Build a Life” at Iowa.

Preliminary inquiries for additional information are encouraged and should be directed to the search committee chair. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2024, although applications will continue to be accepted until January 31, 2025.
