My area of research is the synthesis of organic materials – small, molecules, oligomers, and/or polymers - which are optically or electrically active. Such materials have great potential as active components in organic electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), transistors, solar cells, sensors, and lasers, in artificial light harvesting systems, and in energy storage devices. The development of such new materials is vital as part of efforts to produce environmentally sustainable energy sources. Of particular importance is the investigation of the relationships between the properties of the materials and their structures. Here not only the structures of the molecules, but of assemblies of the molecules are important in determining the properties of the materials. As a result, another area of interest is in using self-assembly of small molecules to create macromolecular materials to be used in devices
