The Department of Engineering Science intends to appoint an Associate Professor of Engineering Science (Solid Mechanics) with effect from 1 October 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The successful candidate will work at the Department of Engineering Science (Central Oxford, OX1 3PJ) and will be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Pembroke College under arrangements described in the Job Description. The combined University and College salary will be on a scale currently from £55,755 to £74,867 per annum plus additional benefits (see the Job Description for full details), including a housing allowance of “12,000. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.

 

This appointment will add further strength to the Department’s internationally renowned portfolio of research in Solid Mechanics Engineering.  Applicants are particularly sought with demonstrated research expertise in Computational Mechanics and its applications.  This might include, for example, constitutive model development, multi-scale and multi-physics approaches, AI, machine learning and data-centric approaches, or digital twins & surrogate models.  The department has an interest in building further collaborations between Solid Mechanics and other areas of strength, such as Information Engineering / Machine Learning, and in growing links to applications in strategically important industrial sectors.

 

Candidates will have a strong research background, including a doctorate in a relevant discipline, and will be expected to engage in and lead high-quality original research. They will be able to secure external research funding and engage in the management of research projects. This will require the supervision of research students and research assistants. They will lecture undergraduate courses and give six hours of tutorials per week during the eight weeks of the undergraduate term, as well as acting as a trustee of the college playing a role in college governance.  They will have the ability to teach effectively, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, and have excellent interpersonal skills for undertaking tutorial teaching.
