The proposed research cluster is part of a $40M+ investment by the State of North Carolina and UNC Charlotte, which includes the design and construction of state-of-the-art facilities, acquisition of advanced equipment, and two dozen faculty positions to accompany expansion of undergraduate and graduate programs.

The College seeks the best candidates in all areas of Computing. It is particularly interested in candidates with foundational, use-inspired, or transdisciplinary research interests in:

  1. Cloud/Distributed Systems, including reliable self-sustained large-scale systems, information management infrastructures and novel database architectures, and high- performance computing.

  2. Cyber-physical systems, including robotics, computer vision, edge computing, human- AI collaboration, mobility, and the future of work, especially in the usage of AR/VR/XR

  3. New Models of Computing and Algorithms, including photonic and quantum computing, analog neuromorphic computing, combinatorial algorithms, and continuous optimization.

  4. Modern software systems, including agile development, auto-coding and code analytics, dependability, security, evolution and social aspects, and software supply chain management.

  5. Human centered computing, UX, and social and behavioral aspects of computing in the age of AI.

  6. Security, privacy, resiliency, and intelligence in future smart environments such as healthcare, manufacturing, energy and transportation systems.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in a computer science or computer engineering discipline or another closely related field and have a background aligning with one of the listed research foci. In addition, they must demonstrate significant accomplishments or outstanding potential in scholarship, teaching, and research, corresponding to the rank of appointment. Successful candidates are expected to: 1) develop and sustain nationally and internationally recognized, externally funded research programs as evidenced by high-quality publications, successful mentoring of students, innovation and entrepreneurship activities; 2) contribute to teaching and curriculum development at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and 3) participate in selected University initiatives.

In Dec. 2022, the College ranked 39th in the latest NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) list. Nine faculty members are NSF Career awardees, one is a AAAI Feigenbaum Awardee, and eight were ranked among the top two-percent of scientists in the world based on the study conducted and published in 2021. The CCI faculty research and programs rank high in almost every metric (Visualization top 30, parallel and high-performance computing top 40, Robotics top 45, etc.) By design, the College’s research is driven by a balance between an unbounded curiosity for fundamental questions and an urgent sense of mission to affect the important issues we face as a society.
