Faculty Position in Computing: Educational Scholar

Queen’s University

January 2026

The School of Computing at Queen’s University invites applications for a teaching- and education-focused, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with specialization in Computational Intelligence and applications in Software Engineering and/or Cybersecurity. The preferred start date for the appointment is January 1, 2026.

This is a teaching-focused appointment with a primary focus on delivering exceptional undergraduate and graduate education. The normal teaching load is five courses per year (approximately 70% of the overall workload), with the remaining time devoted to research/scholarship and service.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree completed at the start date of the appointment. The successful candidate will provide evidence of:

  • Scholarly work and/or teaching experience applying Artificial Intelligence in Software Engineering and/or Cybersecurity;
  • Strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • An ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the School’s programs.

Candidates must also provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary, student-centered environment and be prepared to contribute to service at the department, Faculty, University, and/or community levels. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The main criteria for selection are:

  • Commitment to academic and teaching excellence, including experience in curriculum development.
  • Proven capacity for research in areas of Computational Intelligence, including (but not limited to) generative AI, machine learning, natural language processing, and evolutionary computation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying AI methods to Software Engineering and/or Cybersecurity in either teaching or research contexts.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach the equivalent of five courses per academic year (approximately 70% of workload) across undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching and contribute to curriculum development in areas related to Computational Intelligence, Software Engineering, and/or Cybersecurity;
  • Maintain a program of research or scholarship, with potential for peer-reviewed publications and external research funding;
  • Work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-focused environment;
  • Contribute to the academic and pedagogical excellence of the School of Computing;
  • Provide effective service to the School, Faculty of Arts and Science, University, and broader community.

Vaccination Requirements

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. These requirements were suspended effective May 1, 2022, but the University may reinstate them at any point.

The School of Computing

The School of Computing has 32 full-time and 20 cross-appointed faculty, over 1500 undergraduate students, and over 200 graduate students. The School offers undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Software Design, Computing and Mathematics, Computing and the Creative Arts and Cognitive Science, as well as dedicated major options in Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Computation, Data Analytics, Fundamental Computation, and Security. The School also offers Master’s, and Doctoral programs in Computer Science, with dedicated programs for Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Medical Informatics, and Biomedical Informatics.

The City

The University is situated on the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe, in historic Kingston on the shores of Lake Ontario. Queen’s is an integral part of the Kingston community, with the campus nestled in the core of the city, only a 10-minute walk to downtown. Kingston’s residents enjoy an outstanding quality of life with a wide range of cultural and creative opportunities, with access to many natural areas and proximity to vibrant First Nations Communities including Tyendinaga and Akwesasne. Kingston is a unique Canadian city of 125,000 with a distinct blend of history, recreation, industry, and learning. Kingston offers unique waterfront living with many recreational opportunities.
