The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Instructor in the area of Biomedical Engineering.
The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary has a long history of training undergraduate students in Biomedical Engineering. The focus has been on innovative curriculum with a prominent design component and problem-oriented experiential learning. A minor program (former specialization) is open to students in six engineering disciplines. A new BSc degree in Biomedical Engineering is under development to meet the growing demand.
Biomedical Engineering at the University of Calgary involves more than 300 faculty members across six faculties, with current annual research funding exceeding $75M. The university has made significant investments in Biomedical Engineering to date, including the allocation of six Tier 1 and nine Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs. The main responsibility of the Instructor faculty position is undergraduate teaching in biomedical engineering courses and related labs, as well as Capstone Design advising. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to teaching biomedical engineering subjects related to mechanical engineering, namely biological solid and fluid mechanics or related to electrical engineering, namely systems, signals, instrumentation and image processing, in addition to biomedical engineering design. An important component will be incorporating elements from across multiple disciplines with a focus on collaborative, experiential problem solving. The ability to teach other mechanical or electrical engineering subjects will be considered an asset.
Evidence of excellence in teaching should be demonstrated via a convincing statement of teaching philosophy, strong teaching evaluations, and an exceptional record of commitment to undergraduate teaching. The Instructor is expected to develop scholarship in engineering education. The Schulich School of Engineering offers an engineering education PhD degree and has a strong teaching faculty presence. The Instructor will develop course content and prepare lectures and other course delivery material, including e-learning, develop laboratory modules for biomedical engineering courses. The Instructor will perform service to the department, university, and the profession; demonstrated potential for leadership is an asset.
The successful applicant will be recruited through the Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education (CBRE) and be appointed in one of the departments in the Schulich School of Engineering. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. or M.S. related to biomedical engineering and be eligible to apply for P.Eng status. Industry experience will be considered an asset.
