Position description
This position is in the Clark lab, within the Department of Bioengineering - California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at the University of California Berkeley. The Clark Lab develops microfluidic and molecular methods for the high throughput analysis of single cells. We use these techniques to study HIV latency in CD4 T cells and profile cellular interactions during central nervous system inflammation.
The Clark lab seeks a talented and driven scientist to lead droplet-based high-throughput forward genetic screens. Central nervous system (CNS)-resident astrocytes and microglia interact to regulate pro-inflammatory programs that drive neurodegenerative diseases, but the pathways and molecules involved are largely unknown. Understanding the language of inflammation is a central question in the field of Neuroimmunology and may guide new therapeutic approaches for neurologic diseases. To address this challenge, the candidate will conduct in vivo and in vitro CRISPR screens to understand the genes, pathway, and molecules involved in neuroinflammation. This is part of our larger effort to build and deploy novel methods to study the interactions between CNS-resident cells. The candidate is expected to collect, analyze, and publish their results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, assist in the writing of proposals for funding from federal agencies and other organizations, and present findings at scientific conferences.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
A minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral research experience.
Preferred qualifications
- PhD degree in bioengineering or a related field such as molecular biology, immunology, or neurology
- Experience with genetic manipulation of mammalian cells.
- Experience with CRISPR screening methods
- Experience with Fluorescence activated cell sorting
- Experience with models of neuroinflammation and/ or neurologic diseases
- Experience with NGS library prep and Illumina sequencing
- Experience with Confocal microscopy
- Experience with Droplet microfluidics
- At least 3 first-authored peer-reviewed publications
- The ideal candidate is an effective communicator, is open to collaboration, and enjoys engaging with a diverse community of academic researchers.
