In 2024-25, SMU Lyle School of Engineering continues its enterprising journey to recruit over two dozen faculty members over a two-year period. Our culture thrives on innovation that transcends traditional boundaries, and we strongly believe in the power of externally-funded, industry-supported research to drive progress and provide exceptional students with valuable industry insights. Our mission is to lead the way in digital transformation within engineering education, all while ensuring that every student graduates as a confident leader.

In the past year, the Lyle School of Engineering has embarked on a bold faculty recruitment campaign, successfully hiring 14 new faculty members, including two department chairs and three directors for our centers and institutes. Building on this momentum, we are now expanding our search into the 2024-25 academic year, opening 10 additional roles. These include key positions such as the Chair of the Computer Science Department, Executive Directors for the Hunt Institute for Engineering & Humanity and the Caruth Institute for Engineering Education, along with several other critical roles essential for advancing our collaborative model.

As we look ahead, SMU Lyle remains dedicated to fostering growth and excellence through ongoing faculty recruitment in the coming years.

Available Positions:

Department Chair Position: SMU Lyle invites accomplished candidates to apply for the Robert H. Dedman Jr. Endowed Department Chair in the Department of Computer Science (CS). The successful candidate will also hold an endowed professorship, with the anticipated start date of January 1, 2025.

Center and Institute Directors

  • Caruth Institute for Engineering Education: SMU Lyle seeks qualified candidates for a tenured faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level to lead the Caruth Institute for Engineering Education. Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in the appropriate or a closely related discipline, with experience commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Hunt Institute for Engineering & Humanity: SMU Lyle invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenured faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level to lead the Hunt Institute for Engineering & Humanity. Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in the appropriate or a closely related discipline, with experience commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor.

Collaboration-Based Tenured/Tenure-Track Positions
To enhance our ability to build large interdisciplinary research teams, we are strategically recruiting across departments based on thematic alignment rather than focusing solely on specialization within each department. SMU Lyle invites accomplished candidates to apply for the following positions:

  • The inaugural Walden & Paula Rhines Endowed Quantum Informatics position in the Computer Science or Electrical & Computer Engineering Departments.
  • An open-rank tenure-track faculty position focused on data science within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Cluster Hiring for Multiple Renewable-Contract Faculty Positions

SMU Lyle is embarking on a bold and transformative initiative to reshape our undergraduate curriculum with a strong focus on innovation, leadership, mentorship, and entrepreneurship. As part of this effort, we are excited to announce the hiring of up to five renewable-contract (non-tenure-track) faculty across our five departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Operations Research and Engineering Management, and Computer Science.

These new faculty members will play a pivotal role in pioneering an innovative experiential curriculum that will be integrated across all disciplines. This curriculum is designed to empower our students with the skills and mindset needed to excel in a rapidly changing world. One of these faculty members, depending on their experience and educational background, will be appointed as the Director of this initiative to further driving our mission to lead in educational excellence.

By joining our team, you will be at the forefront of educational innovation, helping to shape the future leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.  Please check our website in the next couple of weeks when the links to apply will be available.
