Faculty Positions in Smart, Sustainable, and Intelligent Infrastructure

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications from highly qualified individuals for multiple full-time, tenure-earning positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates will be considered at the rank of Associate, or full Professor, based on experience and qualifications. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering or related fields and are expected to develop a rigorous externally funded research program in Smart, Sustainable and Intelligent Infrastructure, teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students, and perform service activities. Joint appointments with any department in the School of Engineering; School of Public Health; and Heersink School of Medicine will be considered if appropriate.

Research Areas

Ideal candidates will have a strong record of inter-disciplinary research and scholarship in Smart, Sustainable and Intelligent Infrastructure. Preference will be given to candidates with active research in one or more of the following areas: sustainable and resilient infrastructure systems; climate change and adaptive infrastructure and resilience; data driven computational modeling for material characterization; smart materials; green and low-carbon-footprint materials. Preference will also be given to candidates with strong background in computational and data driven methodologies, sensor-based decision making, and systems approaches. Candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with multiple existing centers and initiatives at UAB such as the Live HealthSmart Alabama (https://www.uab.edu/livehealthsmartal/ ) and the ) Sanitation Health Program (https://sites.uab.edu/sanitationhealthstudy/.)

The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental (CCEE) Engineering

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) boasts a thriving undergraduate program, multiple highly ranked online Master of Engineering programs, and MS/PhD programs. CCEE faculty conduct research in the built environment, congestion management, infrastructure resiliency, and high-performance structural materials. Birmingham is home to major construction companies that generate over $6.5 billion in annual revenue. The department has a 100 percent placement rate for graduates seeking jobs and 85 percent of undergraduates in the department complete a regional internship or co-op during their time at UAB. The Department has strong, longstanding working relationships with the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham and the City of Birmingham. CCEE has coordinated degree programs and established research collaborations with UAB’s School of Public Health (SPH), which is ranked in the top-20 nationally by US News and World Report.
