University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), College of Engineering (CoE), Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), invites applicants for a full-time Associate Professor or Full Professor position, who have the leadership capacity and skill set to serve as the ME Department Chair, pending position clearance and availability of funds, to begin on August 1, 2023, or as soon thereafter as possible. The successful candidate may be appointed to an 11-month appointment as Department Chair for up to a three-year period; annually renewable; at such time when no longer Chair, the salary and appointment will revert to a nine-month basis.

The position is open to all ME disciplines. Candidates in areas of Aerospace, Biomedical Engineering and/or Thermofluids are specifically encouraged to apply. Applicants should hold an equivalent rank for which they are applying.

The University of Hawai‘i is a Carnegie R1 (i.e., highest research activity) doctoral university, which is recognized as a Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Sun Grant university. Other units within the university, with which the COE closely collaborates, include John A. Burns School of Medicine, Cancer Research Center, Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research & Education (C-MORE), Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI), College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Ocean Resource Engineering (ORE), College of Natural Sciences, Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory (HSFL), Hawaii Institute of Geophysics & Planetology (HIGP), School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Information and Computer Sciences (ICS), Information Technology Center, College of Social Sciences, Institute for Astronomy (IfA), and Laboratory for Advanced Visualization and Applications (LAVA). The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering, and its undergraduate program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

The department has active research programs in biomedical engineering, soft materials, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), high-performance computing, microscale and nanoscale heat transfer, microfluidics, acoustics, boiling and two-phase flow, multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization, space and ocean science & exploration, aerospace engineering, robotics, uncrewed autonomous systems (UAS), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), dynamical and control systems, composites and nanocomposites, nanomaterials, micro/nano devices, nanomanufacturing, renewable energy, smart structures, corrosion, and tribology. Duties and Responsibilities

As faculty

Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering;

Develop externally funded research programs and research collaborations that result in publications in leading scholarly journals;

Present research work in leading scholarly conferences;

Supervise undergraduate and graduate students and independent study activities;

Teach via various distance delivery modes as required;

Serve as academic advisor to students;

Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as appropriate, including committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees;

Render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty;

Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials, laboratory materials, and special instructional methods; and

Perform related tasks as assigned.

 

As chair, if appointed (in addition to faculty duties and responsibilities):

Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, including managing operating budget, personnel actions, curriculum development, course scheduling, teaching assignments, and academic advising;

Develop a vision for leadership in alignment with those of the Dean and the University, including continuous improvement of processes and advocacy for students, staff and faculty, and research;

Coordinate initiatives and contribute towards improving the department’s national and international standing;

Develop and oversee programs for fundraising campaigns, alumni relations, external communications, and community engagement;

Establish and maintain relationships with industry partners, including collaborative projects and work opportunities for students through internships and employment;

Establish and maintain student exchange programs with other universities, particularly those in Asia and the Pacific.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Associate Professor MQs

An earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing;

A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity;

Demonstrated expertise in ME discipline(s);

Demonstrated success in teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels;

Ability to develop and teach innovative interdisciplinary courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels;

Documented scholarly achievement, such as a record of publications in scholarly journals and leading roles in research projects commensurate with the rank;

Experience in securing extramural research funding;

Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with others; and

Ability to engage successfully in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Professor MQs

An earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing;

A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of associate professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity;

Desirable Qualifications

Three years or more post-tenure experience at a research-intensive academic institution;

Established record of participation or leadership in national/international academic organizations;

Scholarly experience in emerging and cross-disciplinary research areas;

Supervisory administrative experience that includes managing budgets;

Demonstrated ability to promote the professional development of faculty and staff;

Demonstrated ability in assessing academic programs;

Familiarity with ABET processes and procedures;

Demonstrated ability in establishing interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaborations and partnership in research and teaching;

Strong leadership skills and established record of providing leadership to university faculty and staff in an academic setting;

Research focus on or experience with Hawaii and/or the Asia/Pacific region; and

Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
