The School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (CEES) and School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) within the Gallogly College of Engineering (GCoE) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) jointly invite applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Transportation Analytics, with emphasis in Data-Driven Infrastructure Materials, Condition Assessment, Asset Management, Smart Operations, Human-Centered Designs, and/or Equitable Access. A rapid upsurge in extreme weather events and accelerated pace of climate change are impacting the durability and service life of our aging infrastructure, threatening the safety and mobility of users, and contributing to supply chain disruptions. Transformational growth in data science and analytics/machine learning/artificial intelligence (DSA/ML/AI) makes possible development of tools and technologies for infrastructure durability, novel materials, infrastructure condition assessment, performance-based asset management, and vulnerability assessment of multimodal/multicommodity transportation systems. Also, congestion mitigation, route planning, system resilience, sustainability, vehicle to everything (V2E) communications, fairness, safety, and risk-based decision-making benefit significantly from such developments.

Transportation is a GCoE strategic research cluster area under the “Adaptive Infrastructure” umbrella. Recent funding of the Southern Plains Transportation Center (SPTC) by the USDOT as a Regional UTC has created a unique opportunity for the GCoE to emerge as a leader in improving the durability and resiliency of our transportation infrastructure and making it climate-adaptive.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to bridge the fields of transportation infrastructure and analytics across disciplines to tackle large infrastructure challenges. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team in developing a strong, externally-funded, and nationally recognized research program and teach undergraduate and graduate courses focused on transportation, data analytics, and/or their core area of research across both departments. The successful candidate will join the team building a Transportation Pathways initiative as part of the Engineering Pathways programs –  an academic/industry partnership to address major research and workforce development needs, funding opportunities, and growth.

The successful applicant is expected to assist the schools in offering core and elective undergraduate courses; offer graduate courses in their area of specialty; and develop an active, externally-funded, and nationally recognized research program in transportation analytics. The successful applicant will be considered for a joint appointment with CEES and ISE academic units, and the academic home will be based on the research and teaching interests and expertise.

Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in civil engineering, transportation engineering, industrial and systems engineering, data science or related field at the start of the appointment. Evidence of the ability to build a record of externally funded research and scholarship is required.

We seek candidates who support excellence in all aspects of faculty responsibility, including a positive and engaging classroom, a collaborative academic community, and an ethos of service toward professional commitments.

Applicants must provide the following: (1) a cover letter outlining scholarly contributions, experience in externally funded research and creative activity, experience in teaching and/or mentorship, and contributions to related service. Any unique experiences, skills, or qualifications which foster a robust and respectful educational environment may be included; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of research interest and vision (no more than three pages); (4) a statement of teaching interests and goals (no more than three pages); (5) contact information for five references; and (6) up to three examples of scholarly activity (e.g., copies of publications). The application should be uploaded to the following website: https://apply.interfolio.com.  Initial screening of applications will begin February 15, 2024, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.  The earliest start date for the position is expected to be August 16, 2024. Inquiries about the position should be addressed to Dr. Musharraf Zaman, chair of the search committee, at zaman@ou.edu
