The unique competitive edge of the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering  in the School of Chemical Engineering is based on sustainable utilization of raw materials, designing more efficient processes and developing new materials and products. Our department’s areas of expertise enable sustainable future with high performance products and processes in circular economy and bioeconomy. The department is in a key position in research of chemical engineering, materials technology, metals processing, efficient energy technologies and digitalization of these. Our core competences include unit operations and processes in chemical engineering, hydro- and pyro-metallurgy, catalyst and polymeric materials, novel catalytic process, process control and process systems engineering.

The Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering invites applications for the position of

PROFESSOR IN METALLURGY

The position can be filled at any level of the Aalto tenure track system (assistant, associate or full professor). The position is full-time and depending on the positioning on the tenure track, either on fixed or permanent term.

The position and our expectations   
A Metallurgy Professor is sought to join the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at Aalto University. Aalto University has a unique competence in metallurgy, research group competences covering all parts of the value chain from minerals processing to metallurgy and recycling.  Here, we are looking for a future world-class academic leader in the field of Metallurgy, with strong expertise in high temperature processes.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the teaching and development of Bachelor, Master and post-graduate level education in Metallurgical Engineering with a focus on Pyrometallurgy.

In research, the professor will work in one of the Aalto key research areas, Materials and Sustainable use of natural resources. Professor in Metallurgy initiates research activities in the field, and is a key part of national metallurgical ecosystem involving research and industrial partners. The professor will conduct experimental research in high temperature metallurgy, with an emphasis in material- and energy efficient processing of raw materials, recycling, processing metals from low-grade and complex primary and secondary resources. Professor of Metallurgy will also utilize digitalization tools and modelling as a tool in research.

The position will be in core to influence sustainable use of natural resources, metals refining and recycling and disruption to sustainability, thus we appreciate the professor to:
  • Initiate research projects on metallurgical refining and recycling and utilization of low grade and complex raw materials
  • Produce high-quality research that can be published in peer-reviewed journals
  • Teach at bachelor and graduate levels
  • Initiate and execute research and education projects of an interdisciplinary nature
  • Integrate new interdisciplinary concepts from research output into educational activities, programs, and curricula
  • Disseminate research results to various interest groups including professionals, students, and academics
  • Contribute proactively and collegially to the progress of the school and department and its international visibility
  • Possess practical expertise in societal activities, industry collaboration, entrepreneurial promotion, interaction with stakeholders and collaboration with decision-makers.


Your experience and ambitions
A doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is a prerequisite for the position. The applicants will be reviewed based on their excellence and future potential in scientific research and teaching, and their active role within the international science community. We appreciate team players who can build an outstanding and dynamic research line, continuously contributing to research and education within the department on undergraduate and graduate levels, in close collaboration with industry and other research groups within Aalto University, nationally, and internationally.

The successful candidate will utilize RAMI Raw Materials infrastructure at Aalto University is a sub-section of the national RAMI infrastructure funded by Academy of Finland. The research facility covers the infrastructure at the School of Chemical Engineering that operate in the field of inorganic materials. The department has high-temperature setups for reaction kinetics and thermodynamics measurements at elevated temperatures (1000-1800 °C), as well as versatile material analysis and characterization equipment.
