Assistant Professor of Teaching in Civil Engineering (II: Structural Engineering)

The School of Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan campus) seeks an outstanding scholar for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Teaching position in the Educational Leadership stream. The position provides a unique opportunity to pursue a career based on excellence in teaching and educational leadership. The starting date of the position will be September 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.



UBC’s Okanagan campus is situated in Kelowna on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan people who continue their thousands of years of stewardship today. Kelowna is surrounded by agricultural areas, lakes, forests, and mountains making it a four-season playground for a variety of outdoor activities, gastronomy, and culture.


The Faculty of Applied Science at UBC has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Since 2005, the School of Engineering as a new addition to the Faculty has distinguished itself with excellence in multidisciplinary and design-focused in teaching and research. The successful candidate(s) is expected to take a leading role in enhancing the teaching and learning environment in the Civil Engineering program. This includes the development and delivery of both graduate and undergraduate courses in the civil engineering curriculum, active participation in capstone design projects, development of undergraduate laboratories and enriching the learning experience of students. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses at the undergraduate level and it is required that he/she will be highly engaged in educational leadership activities including curriculum development and pedagogical innovation, development and implementation of innovative teaching practices related to design and laboratory education, and other teaching and learning initiatives. This position will also participate in relevant service activities within the University and provide service to the broader academic profession. The applicant needs to demonstrate and teaching experience in the following areas, which include but are not limited to structural engineering and design, finite element method, analysis of indeterminate structures, civil engineering materials, theory of structures, system-based design and construction, and application of civil engineering design.


Applicants must have either demonstrated or possess a clear potential and interest in achieving excellence in teaching and learning, in educational leadership and in providing service to the University and community. Industrial experience particularly would be an asset.


The candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree, or equivalent, in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, and will be expected to be registered, or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia ( Further information on the Faculty of Applied Science is available at
