The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CArEE) at Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T, formerly University of Missouri-Rolla) seeks to strengthen its existing research and educational program by inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position in transportation engineering commencing fall semester 2026. The appointment is anticipated to be at the assistant professor level; however, qualified candidates may be considered at the Associate Professor level.

Candidates with an interest in addressing current research challenges in transportation engineering and systems are invited to apply. All research areas and methodologies within transportation systems are considered. These may include but are not limited to connected, autonomous, shared, and electric vehicles, multimodal transportation and mobility, transportation data science and digital twins, AI and advanced computing applications, freight and logistics, transportation operations and simulation, resilience, and safety. Candidates should demonstrate strong potential for scholarly impact, external funding, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The successful candidate will also teach transportation courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, develop new courses and advise graduate students.

Missouri S&T has a strong history of excellence in transportation research, education, and technology transfer, with broad collaborations with the U.S. DOT, state DOTs, and the FHWA, including housing University Transportation Centers at the Tier-1, regional, and national levels. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved in interdisciplinary research within the department and across campus, including collaborative opportunities with campus research centers such as the Center for Research in Energy and Environment(https://cree.mst.edu/), the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (http://cies.mst.edu/),  the Center for Intelligent Infrastructure (http://cii.mst.edu), the Missouri Center for Transportation Innovation (https://mcti.missouri.edu/), the Intelligent Systems Center (http://isc.mst.edu/), and Kummer Institute Center for Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems (https://caias.mst.edu). The successful candidate may also be able to leverage resources made available through one or more of these centers and secure seed funds through annual calls for proposal by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation.

About the CArEE Department, with 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 25 total faculty, positively impacts society through ground-breaking research and high-quality graduate and undergraduate education spanning a legacy of over 150 years. The CArEE department’s research expenditure in FY2024 exceeded $6.8 M. The department has over 800 students across the seven-degree programs. The department enjoys strong support from alumni and corporate partners with seven endowed professorships and awarded $1.3M annual alumni scholarships to CArEE students in 2024. Recent fundraising resulted in a $7.5-million expansion for the Clayco-Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory, which opened in 2021. The department’s programs have been ranked among the top 31 undergraduate civil engineering, top 42 graduate civil engineering, and top 52 environmental engineering programs by U.S. News and World Report.
