Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering

Tenure-track, 9 month

The William B. Burnsed Jr. Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (www.southalabama.edu/colleges/engineering/me/) at the University of South Alabama (USA) in Mobile, Alabama, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Aerospace Engineering. The expected starting date is August 15, 2026. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in aerospace engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must have prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level, with preference given to those with expertise in compressible flows and propulsion. Applicants with industrial experience in aerospace engineering applications are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the aerospace and mechanical engineering curricula, develop an externally funded, independent research program, and collaborate with faculty across various academic units.

Located in the beautiful historic city of Mobile, the University of South Alabama has a Carnegie Classification of R2, with a recently announced goal by President Bonner to achieve R1 status. USA is recognized as a National University by U.S. News & World Report and by "Washington Monthly." The university enrolls over 14,000 students in its ten colleges and schools. Mobile is home to Airbus America’s Engineering Center and the first Airbus assembly lines in North America. The city serves as a busy U.S. port and a main center of commerce for the 600,000 residents of Alabama's two coastal counties.

The William B. Burnsed Jr. Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering is housed in Shelby Hall, a modern, 155,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. The department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (with a Biomedical Engineering track) and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. A B.S. in Aerospace Engineering was introduced in Fall 2024, with preparations already underway for the program’s first ABET review in 2029. The College of Engineering offers the Ph.D. degree in Systems Engineering and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering track in conjunction with the USA College of Medicine.
