Position overview

Position title: Project Scientist
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2025-26/represented-july-2025-scales/t38-b.pdf. The current full-time base salary for this position is $97,000-$126,700. "Off-Scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: November 1, 2025

Position duration: This is an 18-month appointment with the possibility of an extension depending on performance and continuation of appropriate funding.

Position description

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Assistant Project Scientist to work with Professor Josh Apte in the area of mobile air pollution monitoring. The Apte Research Group uses methods from environmental engineering, aerosol science, exposure assessment, and environmental health to understand the relationships between emissions, atmospheric transformations, concentrations, human exposures, and health effects.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute as a collaborating scientist to planning and overseeing air pollution field campaigns, especially using the UC Berkeley mobile air quality laboratory
  • Provide day-to-day direction and oversight of the UC Berkeley mobile air quality laboratory and its associated measurement instrumentation, especially during intensive field studies.
  • Supervise, train and mentor undergraduate students and assist in the supervision, training and mentorship of graduate students and postdocs in field air pollution research
  • Analyze and interpret air pollution measurement datasets, develop reports and communicate findings in peer-reviewed research
  • Sustain ongoing operation of the mobile air quality lab, including planning and executing maintenance, protocols and upgrades
  • Contribute to developing research proposals and securing funding for air quality research projects, especially in regard to mobile monitoring
  • Assist in the development individual research lines within the overall mission of the Apte Research Group and the air pollution mobile monitoring projects.
  • Create and manage the driving schedules and routes of a 20-foot air pollution monitoring cargo can, including driving duties.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD or equivalent international degree

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering or similar
  • Experience designing, implementing, and supervising air pollution field research.
  • Extensive experience in advanced instrumentation for characterizing the chemical composition and physical properties of gas- and particle-phase air pollution.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in aerosol measurement technology.
  • Extensive experience in capacity building / training / mentorship in atmospheric science and air pollution.
  • Peer reviewed journal articles in high-quality journals.
  • Experience driving a 20-foot van for field research
  • Extensive knowledge of air pollution sources among communities in the SF Bay Area and northern region of the California Central Valley.
  • At least 5 years conducting field research in air pollution monitoring
  • Prior postdoc experience
