The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is seeking an outstanding candidate to fill a full-time, appointment-stream faculty position at the assistant professor level with the principal duty of teaching Mechanical Engineering. The MEMS department offers an exceptional curriculum with courses emphasizing active learning, project-based learning, and other research-backed education practices. Together with the broader School of Engineering, we offer multi-disciplinary certificate programs in Sustainability, Data Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Simulation in Design, and Nuclear Engineering.

The candidate is expected to teach up to nine credit hours per term, or six courses per academic year, with the potential for summer teaching. The candidate should be able to teach core thermo-fluid sciences (thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics) and a range of other courses in the department (e.g., statics, dynamics, controls, mechanical design, or measurements). Competency in teaching simulation and computation is an added benefit. Applicants must possess a PhD or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Applicants should have a dedication to teaching and be able to describe their teaching philosophy. Other responsibilities may include student advising and other administrative duties.

The position is for the academic year with an initial appointment of two years duration that is eligible for renewal. We are looking to hire at the assistant professor level, but applicants with outstanding teaching records at the associate professor and full professor levels are encouraged to apply. Appointment-stream faculty have opportunities for advancement within this track as well as professional development.

The MEMS Department currently has four appointment-stream faculty focused on teaching and education research as well as 33 tenured or tenure-track faculty who generate $16 million in annual research expenditures. The School of Engineering offers technology-enhanced lecture rooms and an extensive Makerspace for use in courses and student projects. Qualified applicants should submit their applications through the Pitt Talent Center under requisition # 25000074. The application should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, a statement describing experience with or interest in activities to enhance diversity, inclusion, and equity, and the names and contact information of at least three references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

This commitment is a fundamental value of the University and is crucial in helping us advance our mission, which includes attracting and retaining diverse workforces.
