FACULTY POSITION IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

The Asian institute of Technology (AIT) is an autonomous, international and inter-governmental postgraduate institution that promotes technological change and sustainable development in the Asian-Pacific region and beyond through higher education, research and outreach activities. Established in Thailand in 1959, AIT has become a leading regional postgraduate institution and is actively working with the public and private sector partners throughout the region and with some top universities in the world. It offers Master’s and Doctoral degrees, diploma and certificate programs in engineering, science, planning and management, and has graduated over 2,500 graduate students from many countries across Asia and beyond.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) proudly hosts one of the oldest and most currently relevant graduate programs in Structural Engineering (STE), a discipline renowned for blending technical prowess with artistic vision. The STE program offers master's and doctoral studies across specializations such as Wind and Earthquake Engineering, Structural Analysis, Mechanics and Computation, and Structural Design and Materials.

AIT is seeking highly qualified applicants for a direct-hire faculty position within the Structural Engineering (STE) department. Positions are open at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with the following qualifications and responsibilities:

Qualifications

  1. Applicant must possess a doctorate degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering or a related field from a well-recognized institution.
  2. The applicant must be able to supervise research work of students at postgraduate level.
  3. The applicant must be able to propose and successfully carry out sponsored research projects in his/her research area.
  4. The applicant must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  5. The applicant should have good networking with the international and local community in structural engineering
  6. The applicant should meet one or more of the following profiles, although other related qualifications may also be considered: 
  • Research experience in bridge engineering or steel structures, complemented by a demonstrated ability to teach and develop new lecture courses on the analysis and design of steel structures, bridge analysis, design and maintenance.

OR

  • Research experience in the field of advanced computational methods in micromechanics of concrete, and teaching experience in the courses on solid mechanics, micromechanics of concrete or numerical methods in structural engineering. Demonstrated ability to design new lecture courses taking into account recent advances and applications in computational structural engineering.

OR

  • Research interests in data-driven structural analysis and design and the application of artificial intelligence in structural engineering; the applicant should have the expertise to teach courses on advanced statistical methods in structural engineering and structural reliability and analysis of structures. The applicant could introduce new courses that integrate state-of-the-art data analysis techniques and AI technologies into structural engineering education.

Responsibilities

  1. Responsibilities include teaching postgraduate courses in specific subject areas.
  2. Supervising the research work of Masters and Doctoral students is a key duty.
  3. The applicant will be expected to collaborate within the STE program team and oversee its operations, including admissions, student engagement, laboratory management, and staff coordination.
  4. Active involvement in student activities is essential, with a strong commitment to providing support and guidance to students.
  5. The applicant will be expected to participate in the periodic revision of the STE curriculum to reflect market demands and global advances, and to establish new courses as needed.
  6. The role involves conducting sponsored research projects and organizing short courses, trainings, seminars, conferences, and other professional events at the program, school, or institute level.
  7. The applicant will be expected to attract sponsored research funding from industry, government and international agencies.
  8. A proactive approach to promotional activities to recruit students is required.
  9. Contribution to the development goals of the program, the School and the Institute is an important expectation.
  10. Supporting the Institute and the wider community in times of need is also an important responsibility.

 

Application Process and Appointment Details

After following the established procedure of screening and evaluation of all applications received, the successful candidate is expected to join the Institute at the start of August 2024 semester as the earliest. The initial appointment is for a period of two years, and is renewable depending on performance and productivity.

The salary offered to the successful candidate is regionally competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include provident fund, air travel, settlement grant, education subsidy for dependent children and medical benefits according to provisioned Institute policies and procedure.
