Open application for a doctoral student in Robustness Assessment and Improvement of Bridge Structures

Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow, and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 12 000 students, 400 professors, and close to 4 000 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland.

We believe that people from diverse backgrounds can together reach the best results. Diversity is part of who we are. Over 40% of our academic faculty come from outside Finland. We warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to apply, as we want to ensure the continued diversity and inclusiveness of our community. Aalto is committed to equal and transparent recruitment procedures.

At Aalto, high-quality research, art, education, and entrepreneurship are promoted hand in hand. Disciplinary excellence is combined with multidisciplinary activities, engaging both students and the local innovation ecosystem. Our main campus is quickly transforming into an open collaboration hub that encourages encounters between students, researchers, industry, startups, and other partners. Aalto University was founded in 2010 as three leading Finnish universities, Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki, were merged to strengthen Finland's innovative capability.

The School of Engineering is an international unit with nearly 70 talented professors and 3400 full-time students. Currently, the Department of Civil Engineering has 19 professors together with lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 110.

We are located at the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo where several research institutions and organizations have their laboratories. The Department and School have well-equipped research facilities and access to national scientific computing services.

Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering invites
applications for a doctoral student position in Robustness Assessment and Improvement of Bridge Structures.

The Department of Civil Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and creative doctoral candidate for research on developing the resiliency of bridge structures by improving their robustness/redundancy. The doctoral candidate position is available in the bridge research group. Applicants interested in other research topics related to bridge maintenance and rehabilitation, structural health monitoring, and damage detection of bridge structures, are also welcome to apply.

This research is financially supported by a project currently run at the bridge engineering group at Aalto University.

Bridges are a critical part of the modern transportation network and need to be carefully designed to ensure appropriate levels of safety for the traveling public. The recent collapses of several bridges have highlighted the importance of the role of robustness/redundancy in the safety of bridges. Towards the 2nd generation of Eurocodes, this research aims to investigate the robustness that exists in bridge structures and propose frameworks for robustness assessment and improvement. The main tasks of the Ph.D. student consist of developing the bridge robustness evaluation method and developing the improving methods for bridge robustness, using reliability analysis, numerical simulation, and laboratory or field test results.

The selected candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Weiwei Lin, together with the current postdoc and doctoral students in the Bridge Engineering group. The successful applicant will have the possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers and attend scientific conferences and meetings.

The doctoral studies at Aalto take approximately four years, during which the doctoral candidate is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation (typically based on a student's publications), 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits, and 3) participate in teaching.

The position is expected to start as early as September 2022 or soon after.

  • Required background: The candidate should have a master’s degree in structural engineering, bridge engineering, or structural mechanics, with excellent or very good grades. The ideal candidate also has a background in structural uncertainty or reliability analyses. Knowledge of structural health monitoring, damage detection, and structural maintenance and rehabilitation is considered an advantage.
  • Expected skills and knowledge: Being able to use at least one structural analysis software (e.g., Abaqus) and being able to perform structural tests independently are essential requirements. The capability to collaborate in an international research community with the English language is also needed.

The applicant for doctoral studies must meet the admission requirements of Aalto University:

The position may not be opened if no qualified candidate is found.
