Research theme area:
Greenhouse gas (GHG) program.

Abstract:
Gas separation is a crucial process for controlling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Membrane separation is one of the promising technologies for CO2 capture. Currently, this technology receives worldwide attention due to its easy operation, low environmental impact and low energy consumption when compared to other conventional gas separation processes. Furthermore, the incorporation of nanomaterials in membrane matrices plays an important role, providing additional benefits in selective gas separation processes and providing mechanical stability.

In this context, the objective of this project is to develop and obtain a proof of concept of CO2/N2 separation membranes based on new nanostructured materials. This approach aims to mitigate CO2 emissions and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

The candidate will collaborate with the researchers of project 68 - “New technologies for CO2 capture: deep eutectic solvents (DES) for CO2 capture and nanostructured materials for gas separation (advanced materials for membranes)” within the FAPESP-Shell Research Center for Greenhouse Gas Innovation at POLI-USP at the University of São Paulo.
Summary of the program and projects can be found on the RCGI website (https://sites.usp.br/rcgi/greenhouse-gases-ghg-2/).

Description:
The postdoctoral activities follow a list of objectives and activities involving (scientific reports and article writing will be carried out concurrently):

  1. Literature review
  2. Synthesis of nanostructures
  3. Analysis of the effects of incorporating nanostructures into polymer matrices
  4. Manufacture of membranes for CO2/N2 separation test
  5. Analytical characterizations (DRX, SEM, Raman, FTIR, MET, TGA)
  6. Membrane permeability and selectivity test.

Requirements to fill the position:
This project is suitable for a highly motivated candidate with experience in chemical syntheses and operating analytical instruments for characterization of nanostructured materials.

- The candidate must have a PhD in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Engineering (or related) and meet FAPESP's academic criteria (Doctorate held less than seven years ago, priority for candidates who have just completed their doctorate, within the regular deadline, with an excellent postgraduate academic record).

INFORMATION ABOUT FELLOWSHIP:
This fellowship is funded by FAPESP. The fellowship will cover a stipulated standard maintenance depending on the position level.
