The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) offers a studio-based professional education in a comprehensive university setting, providing students with the skills to produce groundbreaking artworks and pursue careers in the design and media fields. ADM promotes Singapore’s creative culture and aims to transform Singapore into a regional center of media and creativity. ADM offers two BFA programs: Media Art (with specializations in Film, Animation, Games, and Photography) and Design Art (with specializations in Interactive Design, Visual Communication, and Product Design). ADM also offers MA and PhD programs by research across all areas of the school, including Digital Filmmaking.

The School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invites applications for the tenure-track position in Interactive Product Design. The appointment of Assistant or Associate Professor will commensurate with experience.

The position of Assistant/Associate Professor in Interactive Product Design is essential to driving the University's commitment to excellence in art, design, and media education. Suitable candidates must have significant experience in all aspects of interaction design and product design which includes user experience, product conceptualisation, user experience simulation through computers in traditional as well as AR and VR environments. Candidates need to be well versed in latest model making and prototyping techniques and technologies including physical and virtual modes.

We seek an innovative and dynamic educator who is passionate about teaching, academic research, and creative practice in the rapidly evolving field of interactive product design. Through the delivery of innovative curricula grounded in conceptual and critical thinking as well as rigorous craft, the Assistant or Associate Professor in Interactive Product Design readies the next generation of creative professionals in interaction and product design.

The candidate must demonstrate the potential to bring international visibility to the school through high-quality academic scholarship and/or impactful creative activity. Tenure-track hires are expected to pursue activities that will position them as well-known experts in their field.

The school expects a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate and graduate students; school and university committee service; and community engagement. The university provides many opportunities for funded faculty research and excellent facilities through both physical and virtual labs.

Applicants for this position will be aware of the evolving landscape in interaction and product design and will have the confidence to maintain their creative, academic, and technical skills to contribute to the vibrant research-driven culture embraced at NTU's School of Art, Design, and Media. Successful candidate will play a key role in developing an innovative curriculum that aligns with the needs of today’s industry and society. These positions are research-based, so the candidates will either have a well-established research profile or the ability to quickly establish one.

Suitable candidates must have significant experience in all aspects of interaction and product design, a holistic understanding of the design process process, an appreciation for interactive technology and virtual product design, as well as evolving trends in the field. Deep expertise in Interactive Product Design, including but not limited to UX/UI design, interactive systems, prototyping, design thinking, and human-centered design. Applicants should demonstrate a sustained track record in creative practice and possess appropriate teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

As a candidate, you should demonstrate the following:

  • Significant experience and expertise in all aspects of interaction and product design. Deep expertise in at least one or more current technologies: 3D printing, hybrid live-action visual interaction will be an advantage
  • A strong track record in teaching a variety of different aspects of interaction and product design with an emphasis on user experience, visual storytelling and interaction.
  • A holistic understanding of the design process, and an appreciation for visual aesthetics, both computer generated and prototypes as well as evolving contemporary practices.
  • Practical and technical skills supported by critical and conceptual theory, encompassing the diverse approaches to design throughout all aspects of interaction and product design.
  • Demonstration of scholarship in contemporary publication or output forums for interaction, user experience and product design

Requirements:

  • A terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in a relevant field related to interaction, user experience and product design is preferred. Candidates with a Master's degree and substantial industry experience may also be considered.
  • A strong portfolio and track record that evidences a capacity for significant impact in interactive product design
  • A strong conceptual and critical foundation and the ability to support developments in interaction and product design using the latest technological advancements.
  • Significant experience and expertise in all aspects of interaction and product design. Strong proficiency in at least one or more current technologies: 3D printing, hybrid live-action visual interaction, human-computer interfaces, robotics, creative coding, AI-driven Design and Generative Systems, VR/AR.
  • A strong track record in teaching a variety of different aspects of interaction and product design with an emphasis on user experience, visual storytelling and interaction.
  • A holistic understanding of the design process, and an appreciation for visual aesthetics, both computer generated and prototypes as well as evolving contemporary practices.
  • Practical and technical skills supported by critical and conceptual theory, encompassing the diverse approaches to design throughout all aspects of interaction and product design.
  • Demonstration of scholarship in contemporary publication or output forums for interaction, user experience and product design
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level is required. The suitable candidate is expected to advise students on projects from conceptualization and writing through to post-production.
