Description
The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University seeks faculty candidates for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor rank under the theme of intelligent and resilient civil infrastructure. It is of interest to recruit a faculty member conducting research in one or more of the following areas: smart cities, intelligent infrastructure, next-generation transportation systems, integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems, cyber-physical systems, instrumented/monitored infrastructure, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, urban hydrology, flooding, hazard and risk assessment, and infrastructure system performance. Of highest interest are candidates whose research combines expertise in emerging areas within the civil engineering domain, and/or who are performing unique transdisciplinary research to address pressing civil engineering challenges and define new disciplinary frontiers.

The Assistant Professor will be responsible for providing comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional education in their field of expertise in alignment with the departmental academic programs to produce the next generation of Civil Engineering professionals. They will advise dissertation research of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. They will guide the student's professional preparation and career development under their mentorship. They will engage in scholarly research and publications in their field. They will develop independent or collaborative grant proposals to support their research and students under their mentorship. They will help advance the department's research and academic portfolio. The Assistant Professor will also perform departmental and university services such as assigned by the department chair.


Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) in civil engineering or a closely related field in hand by July 2025. Experience in one or more of the following areas: smart cities, intelligent infrastructure, next-generation transportation systems, integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems, cyber-physical systems, instrumented/monitored infrastructure, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, urban hydrology, flooding, hazard and risk assessment, and infrastructure system performance. Experience with developing a robust externally funded research program. Experience with pursuing high-impact scholarly research. Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the civil engineering curricula. Experience advising and guiding students. Ability to engage in outreach and professional activities.

Preferred Qualifications:
A professional engineer's license, or the potential to obtain one. Research experience combining expertise in emerging areas within the civil engineering domain. Experience with transdisciplinary research to address pressing civil engineering challenges and define new disciplinary frontiers.

Department Description: The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University was established in 2012 and is one of nine academic departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The department currently has 10 tenure-system faculty members, with approximately 165 undergraduate and 45 graduate students. Our faculty have a diverse range of expertise and multidisciplinary training, driving innovation and excellence in both research and teaching. Guided by a forward-thinking philosophy, they are dedicated to solving pressing challenges in civil infrastructure and the environment, making discoveries that expand the role and impact of civil engineering, and educating the next generation of professionals and leaders in the field.

As one of the only two comprehensive (Bachelors to Ph.D.) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York, the Department of Civil Engineering at SBU is playing a key role in addressing critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. The department is a partner of the New York State (NYS) Center for Clean Water Technology, the NYS Infrastructure, Transportation, and Security Center, and the Atlantic Marine Energy Center. Faculty also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERT), the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, and the AI Innovation Institute.
