Special Conditions: We seek nationally and internationally recognized educators and researchers to apply for the Academic Department Head and Robert G. Myers Professor position of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department in the College of Engineering at the New Mexico State University (NMSU). NMSU is a land-grant institution with a student population of more than 24,000. Carnegie has classified NMSU as a Doctoral University with Higher Research Activity and as a Community Engagement institution with a large body of Hispanic and Native American students. The department has strong research programs in Aeroelasticity and Fluid Structure Interaction, Dynamics and Vibrations, Fluid Mechanics, Robotics and Controls, Solid Mechanics and Materials, and Thermal Science and Energy. The MAE Department offers ABET-accredited BSAE and BSME degree programs, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. programs in both mechanical and aerospace engineering. The department currently has 15 FTE faculty positions plus 3 additional tenure-track faculty positions currently under search, over 750 undergraduate students, and over 45 graduate students.
Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or closely related field. The applicant must show a sustained record of scholarly activities and research as evidenced by archival publications, graduate supervision, and nationally competitive funding. Qualifications include: a strong record of scholarly and professional accomplishments that merit appointment as a tenured full professor, a demonstrated record of creating a positive people-centric climate, excellent interpersonal skills, a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and student success, a record of management in a research or academic environment, and a successful record of junior faculty development. The successful candidate must articulate and communicate a clear vision to lead the MAE Department towards academic excellence and must have excellent communication skills to proactively engage with partners in academia, government, industry and the community; excellent organizational skills; knowledge of state, federal and private sector fund-raising; and the ability to enable and encourage researchers in various research areas to collaborate.
Examples of Duties: Academic, administrative, budgetary and personnel decisions; sustaining ABET accreditation; recruiting and retention of students and faculty; providing innovative and energetic leadership in teaching, research, extension, outreach, development activities; and securing research funding.
