Assistant Professor (Aerospace); Position numbers 84156, 84244; the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor positions (focus area: Aerospace), pending position clearance and availability of funds, to begin on August 1, 2024 or as soon thereafter as possible.
 
The positions are open to all applicants specializing in the areas of aerospace engineering with a preference given to those with background and experience in one or more of the following focus areas: propulsion, gas dynamics, aerodynamics, applied estimation, control for aerospace applications, Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, celestial mechanics, aircraft flight mechanics, space flight dynamics, air and/or space vehicle design, aeronautics, small aerial vehicles, hypersonics, system engineering, and airspace management. Relevance to the topics of Hawai’i’s aerospace market and workforce development, and experience in emerging research areas and cross-disciplinary activities are particularly encouraged.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Teach, conduct, and develop assigned undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars, including via various distance delivery modes as required, including courses in the areas of mechanical and aerospace engineering; 
• Develop an independent, extramurally funded research program;
• Communicate research work in leading scholarly conferences and leading peer-reviewed journals
• Supervise independent research and study activities;
• Serve as an academic advisor for students;
• Serve on the Departmental, College, and University committees;
• Render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty;
• Serve on thesis and dissertation committees of candidates for advanced degrees;
• Lead and participate in aerospace engineering initiatives at the University of Hawai‘i and the UH Manoa College of Engineering
• Perform related tasks as assigned by the Department Chair;
• Support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students from populations typically underrepresented in Engineering including Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders;
• Develop research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawaii and/or the Asia/Pacific region;
• Participate in curriculum development activities and initiatives, including efforts towards the development of curricular materials and instructional methods incorporating place-based/Hawaii-based learning to impact aerospace and mechanical engineering knowledge;
• Learn about and implement Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, and/or place-based principles into curriculum, programming, and work culture; and
• Participate in implementing the Native Hawaiian principles from the UH Manoa Strategic Plan to support becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

 Minimum qualifications:

• An earned Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (All-But-Dissertation, ABD, applicants will be considered; however, Ph.D. is required at start of employment);
• Background related to aerospace engineering research topics
• Coursework and/or research experience in the areas mentioned above; 
• Demonstrated instructional ability;
• Demonstrated scholarly achievement;
• Strong commitment to teaching and research excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;
• Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with others, and engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.; 
• Ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in aerospace and/or mechanical engineering;
• Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion

 Desirable qualifications:

• Expertise and experience in one or more of the focus areas mentioned above with emphasis on, but not limited to, one or more of the following: autonomous aerospace systems, advanced navigation methods, air mobility, wind tunnels, systems integration, decision making, AI, machine learning, supervised reinforcement learning.
