The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME) at the United States Military Academy (USMA), in West Point, New York is seeking qualified candidates for Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor (full-time position) to teach undergraduate courses; advise undergraduate students; and provide service to the Civil Engineering Program or Mechanical Engineering Program at West Point to begin in June 2022. 

The position will entail becoming part of the full-time faculty and actively engaging in the West Point faculty domains of teaching, scholarship, cadet development, service, and faculty development.  Candidates should demonstrate a background in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.

A successful candidate will demonstrate: Applicants will be evaluated on the following:  (1) Academic accomplishment to include a Masters or Ph.D. (preferred) in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or closely related field; (2) Ability to advise and manage multiple, complex engineering projects and/or cultivate a portfolio of Defense-related research in their field of expertise; (3) Ability to teach civil or mechanical engineering courses at the undergraduate level; (4) Demonstrated ability in research, scholarship, or professional practice (experience in any of the following areas is desired: all areas of civil engineering, or the following areas of mechanical engineering: robotics or mechatronics, automated laboratory data collection, autonomous air or ground vehicles, control theory, rapid prototyping, manufacturing, weapons engineering and ballistics, or other fields relevant to Army or Defense-related research); (5) Ability or demonstrated potential to mentor cadets and to communicate effectively.

The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering was at the forefront of the origins of West Point as an academic institution and continues to provide important programs today.  Both the Civil and Mechanical Engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.  They consistently rank in the U.S. News and World Report top 10 Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the Nation including 2022 rankings.  Both civil and mechanical engineering are vibrant and energetic programs with more than 450 cadets enrolled, averaging about 110 graduates per year, and over 65 staff and faculty motivated to educate, develop and inspire agile and adaptive leaders of character who design and implement innovative solutions and win in complex environments as trusted Army professionals. Both programs fall within the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering – the preeminent developer of undergraduate engineer-leaders and a model learning community of cadets, faculty, and staff.

USMA is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained community with libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants among other facilities. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.


  • You will be responsible for teaching undergraduate civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering mechanics courses and advising student design and research projects in the Academy's ABET-accredited civil or mechanical engineering program.
  • You will be responsible for teaching, course development, faculty development, cadet development, institutional service as well as research, advising cadet capstone design and independent research projects, and other duties as assigned.
