Harvey Mudd College’s Department of Engineering invites applications for several visitor and adjunct faculty positions. The Department seeks candidates from a variety of engineering disciplines who can excel in teaching a broadly-based undergraduate curriculum focused on design, systems engineering, and engineering science. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence. Industrial or other practical experience in the field is valued but not required. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in engineering or a related field is required.

Harvey Mudd is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college emphasizing science, mathematics, and engineering. Teaching opportunities include the department’s required courses and technical electives, participation on teaching teams in the design and/or systems engineering sequences, supervising sponsored projects in the Engineering Clinic program, and developing courses in the applicant’s area of specialty. Visiting faculty members will be required to instruct 4 semester long courses, (2 per semester), as well as advise 2 Clinic team projects. Adjunct faculty members will be required to instruct 1-2 courses. Both visiting faculty positions and adjunct faculty positions will be appointments for only the 2018-19 academic year.

Candidates must be committed to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population, particularly groups traditionally underrepresented in engineering; candidates from these groups are encouraged to apply. All candidates are encouraged to describe in the cover letter the nature of their commitment to and experience in broadening participation of underrepresented groups in engineering.

Applicants should submit: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, and the names of at least three references in a single PDF document emailed to: engineeringvisitingprof@g.hmc.edu . For full consideration, applications should be received by January 31, 2018, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Harvey Mudd College enthusiastically welcomes applications from talented individuals from all cultural backgrounds. The College is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Qualified applicants will be given consideration for employment without regard to age, race, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, protected veteran’s status, disability, or any other characteristics protected by applicable law. The College’s Equal Opportunity and Nondiscrimination Statement and information about accommodations is available.

Any questions may be sent directly to Prof. Christopher Clark, Associate Department Chair of Engineering, at clark@hmc.edu.

  • Harvey Mudd College is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the recruitment of candidates historically underrepresented on college faculties. Experience with or demonstrated ability to effectively teach students from diverse backgrounds will be considered among the criteria for appointment.
