Assistant Professor, position number 84683: University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UHM), College of Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, general funds, tenure-track faculty position, pending position clearance and availability of funds. To begin approximately August 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is a Carnegie R1 Doctoral University (Highest Research Activity) with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The Department offers the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and the B.S. degree in computer engineering. The B.S. degree programs in electrical engineering and computer engineering are ABET accredited. Current enrollment is approximately 350 undergraduate and 50 graduate students with 20 faculty members.
The State of Hawai’i has a strong commitment to improving high technology within the state through legislative efforts, tax incentives, and initiatives such as the HI Growth Initiative supported by Governor David Ige. The UHM EE Department has identified key research areas to support this technology-rich environment focused on (but not limited to): big data, nano/biotechnology, renewable energy, cyber/grid security, and computer vision.
Current initiatives in which the successful candidate may engage include:
1) NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Program – a $5 million scholarship award for supporting cyber-security research and workforce development,
2) DHS/NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R) – a venue for participating many national cyber security research and educational programs, including DHS, NSA, NIST, DOD, etc.
3) NSF Center for Science of Information – a $25 million NSF Science and Technology center whose agenda includes statistics, information theoretical and big data techniques with a focus on understanding information in biological/physical/social/engineered systems,
4) NSF-EPSCOR Ike Wai – a multidisciplinary $20 million NSF project to understand fresh water within the island system including development of bio/nano sensors,
5) LAVA – an NSF MRI supported state-of-the-art visualization space looking at integrating computer vision in novel augmented reality environments for storytelling and data visualization,
6) Renewable Energy and Island Sustainability – a campus-wide collaboration to improve food/water/energy sustainability, and
7) UH FabLab – a College of Engineering Makerspace housing tools for rapid prototyping.
Focus Areas of Research
Security and Privacy of Computer Systems and Applications, and related areas: Cyber security is among the top strategical directions of the UH System. Both theoretical and applied research are of interest, and successful candidates must be able to leverage their research to collaborate with other faculty on campus, as well as to develop an independent, competitively funded research program. We are particularly interested in research that is interdisciplinary and can also leverage the existing areas of strength at UHM: computer network security, privacy, CPS/IoT, wireless security, and data science.
Cyber security is critical to our nation’s safety and economy. The UHM EE Department is part of several NSF centers and other initiatives as mentioned above and successful candidates can expect high visibility for their research as well as funding support through these agencies.
Other areas: Candidates with strong research records in other areas are encouraged to apply as well, such as in computer and information systems, and other computer engineering related areas.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching assigned undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including via distance delivery modes; developing an extramurally funded research program; conducting and publishing research work in leading scholarly journals as a record of scholarly activity; serving as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees; participating in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods; supervising independent study activities; serving as academic adviser to students; serving on departmental, college, and university committees; rendering service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty, and; performing related tasks as assigned.
An earned Ph.D. (ABD will be considered; degree must be earned before date of hire) in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline from a university of recognized standing by the start date of the position; demonstrated ability as a teacher; demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of publications; and excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with others.
Strong research record in cyber security, privacy, and related areas. Ideal candidates in the primary search area should be able to leverage the existing areas of strength at UHM: computer network security, privacy, CPS/IoT, wireless security, and data science. We are also interested in applicants in computer systems, information systems, and other computer engineering related areas. Quality of research thus far is an important consideration, as is potential for establishing an extramural funded research program. Exceptional candidates in other areas of electrical and computer engineering are encouraged to apply as well.
